Job Title Instructor (Cosmetology, Barber or Esthetician) or Substitute Instructor Department Education Reports To Director of Education FLSA Status Non-Exempt Summary Teaches assigned curriculum to students by performing the following duties. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Uses the fundamentals of Coba Academy’s Culture to develop a learning environment that is motivational and supports student’s success defined as a successful graduate who will sit for, pass the state board exam and secure employment. Reviews program curriculum and prepares a lesson plan. Presents and demonstrates to coincide with Program Curriculum structure to include: Conceptual/Theory; Advance techniques; and Practical Applications. Subjects to include, but not limited to the theory and practical techniques applying to: Mandate State Board topics; Science and Art of Hair care, Skin Care, Nail Care, Body Care; Industry Standards, Salon/Spa/ Barber Skills, Client Services, Ethics and Business. Utilizes education methodology for the management, testing and submission of required student’s evaluations. Administers school’s policies and procedures fairly and consistently. Is Professional in appearance and demeanor with employee’s handbook policies. Instructs students in subject’s areas such as general sciences (anatomy, physiology, pathology chemistry and electricity), hair care, skin care, nail care, body care, state board and business skills, use and maintenance of tools and equipment, safety, sanitation and disinfection precautions., and instructs the class according to the times listed on the student’s contract. Plans and supervises work of students, individually or in small groups, in the school classroom/salon/treatment or barber area. Evaluates achievement of student’s in practical knowledge weekly or bi-weekly. Written exams are submitted based on classroom schedule. Responsible to every student to ensure that the students receive a complete education that will qualify him/her to pass the State Board Examination and be employable. Follow specific curriculum as it is designed by the Director of Education. Teaching the theory class based on the theory/classroom schedule assigned. Ensures that each student’s practical/critical needs list and weekly or bi-weekly progress sheets are used as a guide to keep each student busy with applied effort. Increases student’s knowledge by conducting advance techniques and demonstrations. Record practical grades to student grade form at the end of each end of cycle or core. Performs the specified academic evaluation on students as required. Monitors and grades each student’s activities (Client In-take Form), ensuring that all practical work is graded by an instructor whether it is on a doll head or client. Reviews current day and carry-over timecards prior to signing them at the student’s stations. Be certain that the additional on the timecard is correct. Make sure timecards have the student’s initials as well as your own initials. Submit timecard and evaluation form at the end of each core/cycle to the Director of Education. Ensures that all stations, disinfection and safety regulations are followed. Brings to the attention of the Director of Education any student who is not performing or is losing interest. Administers all school rules and regulations fairly and without bias. Helps monitor the towel supply and wash and dry towels daily. Carries on all responsibilities necessary as an instructor to ensure that the school is kept orderly and with a positive learning environment. Communicates, cooperates and maintains positive working relationships with other school staff and student body. Maintains appropriate student to teacher business relationship. Do not gossip with students about other students or fellow staff member. Does not argue with another staff member in front of a student of client; does not argue with a student. Maintains Class/ Student management and control. Ensures the class always has a qualified instructor present, never unattended. Always Supervises closely all student work being done by the student on clients or doll heads and ensure that all student is in applied effort in a positive, learning environment. Performs any other duties assigned by the School Operations Manager/ Director of Education and/or the management team. Attend staff meetings at least one is held each calendar year. Qualifications To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactory. Education and/or Experience A minimum of two – three years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization. Mathematical Skills Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, and volume. Ability to apply concepts of basic math and geometry (as applied to hair, skin, nails and body). Reasoning Ability Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations. Certificates, Licenses, Registrations Current certification/License in subject matter.
