Highway Maintenance Lead Specialist, Traffic - Durango

Overview Position: Lead Highway Maintenance Specialist (TM II) – Traffic and Safety Signing/Striping. Location: Durango, Colorado. This role is classified as Transportation Maintenance II. Compensation Annual base pay $58,872–$64,752 (typical). Housing stipend $500/month. Total compensation $64,872–$70,752. Employees are paid biweekly. Job Description Responsibility: Lead and oversee traffic and safety signing/striping crews, ensuring compliant installation, maintenance, repair of highway markings, signs, and related equipment. Perform heavy equipment operation and manual labor under hazardous conditions. Maintain equipment safety and facility conditions. Major Duties and Responsibilities Lead crews performing roadway striping, thermal plastic and stencil markings on Interstates, US and Colorado highways, and frontage roads in accordance with MUTCD and M&S standards. Develop traffic control plans, provide advance warnings, and maintain safe work zones. Manage inventories of signs and paint products, ensuring adequate supply during work season. Guide crews in installation, maintenance, repair, and inspection of class I, II, and III signs. Plan and schedule daily activities, review progress, identify training needs, provide feedback, on‑job training, and mentoring. Conduct performance appraisal input, tailgate safety talks, and ensure all personnel complete required training. Perform snow and ice control, equipment maintenance, building/ground upkeep, and other related maintenance. Complete paperwork and reports, enter SAP work orders and timesheets. Trim and remove trees, remove graffiti, use various equipment responsibly. Ensure proper PPE usage and assist other patrols as needed. Work Environment Exposure to loud noise, fumes, dust, chemicals, high voltage, and heavy traffic. Use ladders, scissor lifts (10–20 ft), and heavy equipment. Work in extreme temperatures, variable weather, and up to 12,000 ft elevation. Work during regular hours and may require overtime, weekends, nights, and emergency response. Required to use computers for daily tasks; average work week 40 hours. Must be physically able and able to read and follow written instructions. Minimum Qualifications At least 3 years of experience in road/highway maintenance, including repair, paving, heavy equipment operation, striping, sign installation, bridge/ditch cleaning, and mechanical mowing. Valid Commercial Driver’s License Class A or B with no air brake restrictions (or ability to obtain Colorado CDL within 30 days of relocation). Pass pre‑employment screening and potential Hazardous Materials endorsement. Ability to work overtime, weekends, and emergency response. Must be able to respond within 30 minutes of notification. May be required to attend annual training in Aurora. Preferred Qualifications Demonstrated success in listed duties, State service experience, scheduling and planning expertise. Knowledge of CDOT traffic operations, equipment, policies, MUTCD, MLOS standards, and CDOT procedures. In‑depth knowledge of Emergency Response Guidelines, MUTCD, Colorado Chain Law, FMCS regulation, and related standards. Strong safety commitment, communication skills, leadership and mentoring abilities. Proficient with SAP, MS Office, Gmail, and quick learning of new software. Positive attitude, adaptability, and strong analytical/problem‑solving skills. Physical fitness and experience with heavy equipment, hand tools, and demanding work. Conditions of Employment Valid CDL Class A or B; Hazardous Materials endorsement may be required. Social security number trace, criminal and driving record check. May require controlled substance test and DOT physical. May require overtime and travel within 30 minutes of work station. Required to report to emergencies outside regular hours, including nights and weekends. Must maintain a valid CDL within 30 days of relocation to Colorado.
