Chief Legal Officer

For our client, we are seeking a Chief Legal Officer to join the team of a leader in the Finance & Insurance space. This role will provide business-aligned guidance focused on governance, compliance, and operational risk management. You will partner with leaders, compliance stakeholders, and cross-functional teams to translate complex issues into practical recommendations. The position offers the opportunity to strengthen responsible execution, improve decision-making, and support sustainable growth within a regulated financial services environment. Location: Washington, DC - US based candidates only, no visa sponsorship available Compensation: $575,000 – $625,000 annually Responsibilities Serve as principal advisor on corporate governance and risk oversight to the Board of Directors Support product innovation and strategic partnerships as a trusted legal partner Lead M&A and strategic transactions to facilitate growth and development Engage with regulators and enforcement bodies, ensuring the company’s compliance and credibility Provide leadership in legal and risk governance frameworks for effective issue management Oversee complex litigations, setting strategies for high-stakes disputes Modernize Legal and Risk operations to enhance effectiveness and efficiency Qualifications Mandatory experience as General Counsel or Chief Legal Officer in a public company, advising the Board and CEO Deep knowledge of governance, securities, regulatory, litigation, and commercial matters in global environments Background in regulated, data-rich, IP-intensive, and technology-enabled sectors, with a preference for financial services and tech Credible experience engaging with regulators and enforcement bodies on significant matters Proven track record in enterprise-wide transformations, including adapting operating models and adopting AI/automation Benefits Work directly with the CEO and Board on legal and governance matters Shape the legal and risk landscape of a major global institution during transformation Collaborate with executive leaders to drive innovation and growth strategies Lead a global legal and risk team in a dynamic, evolving environment Our client is an equal opportunity employer.
