Fort Drum serves as a U.S. Army military installation and is designated as a census-designated place (CDP) within Jefferson County, situated near the western edge of northern New York. According to the 2010 census, the population of the CDP was 12,955. This base is the home of the 10th Mountain Division.

Spanning 107,265 acres, Fort Drum's mission encompasses the command of active component units stationed at the installation, offering administrative and logistical support to tenant units, assisting both active and reserve units from various services during their training at Fort Drum, and planning for the mobilization and training of nearly 80,000 troops each year.

Nestled in the scenic Thousand Islands Region of northern New York State, this installation is located in one of the most distinctive and beautiful areas of the United States. Fort Drum is approximately 30 miles from Canada, bordered by the Great Lakes to the west and the Adirondack Mountains to the east. The Adirondack Mountains, Lake Ontario, and the St. Lawrence River in the Thousand Islands Region are popular tourist destinations. The surrounding tri-county areas of Jefferson, Lewis, and St. Lawrence, including Watertown, New York, are rich in history and tradition.

Federal civilian healthcare providers are not required to carry medical malpractice liability insurance, as they are protected under the Federal Tort Claims Act (28 U.S.C. § 1346(b)) while performing their job duties.

Responsibilities

• Provide a range of services, including examination, diagnosis, prevention, and treatment for newborns, infants, children, and adolescents.
• Deliver comprehensive health services that encompass preventive care, developmental health needs, and the diagnosis and management of both acute and chronic conditions.
• Offer first-contact, ongoing, and comprehensive primary care for the pediatric population, adhering to current care standards, the patient-centered medical home model, Army policies, and applicable regulations.
• Lead a multidisciplinary team responsible for the continuous care of patients.
• Maintain accurate records (both paper and electronic) of all medical services rendered, in compliance with established procedures and regulations.
• Ensure the confidentiality of all reports and records in accordance with the Health Information Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) standards.

Other duties may be assigned as necessary.

Conditions of Employment

• Appointment may require a suitability or fitness assessment based on a completed background investigation.
• This role has specific initial background investigation and periodic re-verification requirements due to the need for interaction with individuals under the age of eighteen.
• A one-year supervisory probationary period is mandatory unless previously completed.
• Selected candidates must agree to receive seasonal influenza vaccinations or provide an accepted exemption.
• This position is classified as a Testing Designated Position, necessitating pre-employment screening and random drug testing. Candidates must consent to participate in random drug urinalysis.
• A pre-placement medical examination is required.
• Immunization screening is mandatory, with Hepatitis B vaccination required for all roles involving direct patient contact. Proof of other vaccinations may be necessary based on the specific position.
• Candidates must meet credentialing standards and obtain and maintain relevant clinical privileges.
• Moderate to heavy lifting, up to 25 pounds, is expected.
• A Personnel Security Investigation is required.
• Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification through the American Red Cross must be obtained and maintained. Advanced certifications (e.g., ALS) do not replace BLS.
• Incumbents may need to acquire and maintain certifications in Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS), Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), or the Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP).
• This position may require tuberculosis testing.

Qualifications

Must be a U.S. Citizen

Basic Requirements for Physician (Pediatrics):

Degree: A Doctor of Medicine, Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine, or equivalent from an accredited institution in the United States or Canada. This degree must have been accredited by recognized bodies such as the Council on Medical Education of the American Medical Association or the Liaison Committee on Medical Education at the time of attainment.

Licensure: Candidates must hold a current, active, full, and unrestricted license or registration as a Physician from a U.S. state, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, or a U.S. territory.

Graduate Training: Following the attainment of a Doctor of Medicine or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine degree, candidates must have completed at least one year of supervised clinical experience, such as a one-year internship or the first year of a residency program in an accredited hospital or institution.

Residency Training: Applicants must have successfully completed the necessary accredited residency training in Pediatrics, along with equivalent experience and training totaling at least four years. Experience cannot substitute for the required residency training for this specialty.
