Job Description: Departmental Overview: The Department of Intercollegiate Athletics consists of more than 200 staff members and coaches and sponsors 30 varsity sports programs. These 30 programs include more than 850 student‑athletes who participate in the various sports programs annually within the National Collegiate Athletics Association (NCAA). We are currently seeking an Assistant Coach for the Men’s & Women’s Swim program. Description of Position: Cal Athletics is seeking a dynamic and experienced leader to serve as the Assistant Coach of the Men’s & Women’s Swim program. The ideal candidate will demonstrate a deep knowledge of NCAA Swimming, a strong commitment to student‑athlete development, and the leadership skills necessary to maintain and grow a nationally competitive program. Responsibilities Support all aspects of the Men’s & Women’s Swim program, including planning, organizing, and supervising team training, practices, and competitions. Assumes responsibility for maintaining and growing a nationally competitive Division I program through successful recruiting and retention of high‑level student‑athletes. Foster an environment that supports the academic and personal development of student‑athletes. Collaborates with Athletic Trainers, Assistant Coaches and Strength and Conditioning Coach(es) to design both academic year (in season and out‑of‑season) and summer conditioning programs. Collaborate with athletic department staff, including academic advisors, compliance, sports medicine, and strength & conditioning. Could support the management program budget, travel arrangements, and equipment needs. In conjunction with various units within the athletic department, participate in donor meetings and events, participate in public relations activities, and monitor both individual and team academic performance to ensure that academic requirements are met. Engage with alumni, donors, and community to promote program visibility and fundraising. Ensure a culture of integrity, sportsmanship, and respect that reflects the values of Cal Athletics. Required Qualifications Must have a bachelor’s degree or equivalent training/experience. Must have highly advanced and effective inter‑personal, motivational and team leadership skills. Must be able to demonstrate creativity, sound judgment and decision‑making, be an effective problem solver, and communicate effectively verbally and in writing. Must have significant coaching experience at the collegiate or elite club level with a track record of success. Must be a recognized expert in team sport and coaching principles for student athletes. Must maintain current knowledge of applicable rules and regulations of the applicable Conference, the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), as well as other associations and agencies to which the Berkeley campus of the University of California adheres, and, at all times avoid any and all violations of these rules and standards. Strong communication, leadership, and organizational skills. Must have the ability to work collaboratively and effectively with diverse groups and stakeholders. Preferred Qualifications Collegiate level coaching experience, preferably at Division I level Familiarity with rules and regulations of NCAA and ACC Conference Salary and Benefits For information on the comprehensive benefits package offered by the University, please visit the University of California's Compensation and Benefits website. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience. The budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $60,000 to $140,000 based upon experience.
