Description

Spire is seeking a technically strong and proactive Senior Accountant to own key areas of the monthly close and help strengthen the accounting infrastructure supporting our MSO and operating entities. This is not a task-only role. The successful candidate will understand how transactions flow through the income statement and balance sheet, identify unusual or incomplete activity, and drive issues through resolution.

The Senior Accountant will have primary responsibility for lease accounting, prepaid expense accounting, in addition to the preparation and review of other key accounts and entity-level analyses. The role will also support process buildouts, documentation, internal controls, integrations, and other projects needed to scale the finance organization.

Responsibilities/Duties:

• Own assigned components of the monthly close for multiple operating and management entities, including journal entries, account reconciliations, consolidations, and timely resolution of open items.
• Perform analytical reviews of assigned balance sheet and income statement accounts and entity results; investigate period-over-period changes, identify unexpected trends or errors, and communicate conclusions and required actions.
• Own ASC 842 lease accounting for operating and finance leases through LeaseQuery, including new leases, amendments, remeasurements, terminations, monthly entries, reconciliations, communication with operators, and support for financial statement disclosures.
• Own the prepaid expense process, including maintaining complete amortization schedules, reviewing additions and classifications, recording monthly amortization, reconciling balances to the general ledger, and identifying aged or impaired items.
• Prepare and review account reconciliations and supporting workpapers that are accurate, complete, easy to follow, and supported by clear evidence and conclusions.
• Support the continued buildout and standardization of accounting processes across Spire's MSO and operating entities, including entity-level close procedures, account ownership, intercompany activity, allocations, and management reporting support.
• Document new and existing processes, risks, controls, and evidence of performance; identify control gaps and recommend practical improvements that strengthen accuracy, consistency, and audit readiness.
• Review accounts and processes for changes in business activity, contracts, systems, or accounting requirements and update related accounting conclusions, workpapers, and controls as needed.
• Coordinate fixed asset and capital spending accounting, including additions, disposals, depreciation, subledger reconciliation, and reporting.
• Support inventory accounting, payroll and bank activity postings, accruals, accounts payable review, debt and revenue reconciliations, and other close activities based on assigned entity responsibilities.
• Assist with the integration of acquisitions and growth initiatives into Spire's accounting systems, close processes, policies, and controls.
• Coordinate with FP&A, operations, accounts payable, payroll, tax, external auditors, and other stakeholders to obtain information, resolve discrepancies, and improve reporting processes.
• Support external audits, internal reviews, and other compliance requests by preparing schedules, explaining accounting positions, and resolving follow-up items.
• Prepare monthly sales and use tax filings and research new or changing filing requirements, as assigned.
• Take ownership of ad hoc accounting projects and process improvements, balancing recurring responsibilities with evolving business priorities.

Qualifications

Qualifications:

• Bachelor's degree in Accounting or a closely related field.
• Four to six years of progressive accounting experience, including meaningful ownership of the month-end close and balance sheet reconciliations.
• Strong working knowledge of U.S. GAAP and the ability to apply accounting guidance to transactions and explain conclusions clearly.
• Demonstrated ability to analyze account activity and financial results, identify inconsistencies, and independently drive follow-up through resolution.
• Strong workpaper discipline, including clear documentation of purpose, source data, procedures, conclusions, reviewer considerations, and evidence of control performance.
• Experience working in a multi-entity environment and managing competing deadlines with limited supervision.
• Advanced Microsoft Excel skills, including pivot tables, lookups, data validation, and structured reconciliation and analysis techniques.
• Clear written and verbal communication skills and the ability to work effectively with finance and non-finance stakeholders.
