Clinical Research Scientist
Allman Institute
Job Description
Job Description
The Allman Institute is a translational research organization applying personalized medicine to treat severe and historically difficult-to-treat diseases, beginning with pulmonary fibrosis and chronic lung transplant dysfunction. The Institute combines deep molecular profiling, longitudinal clinical data, and a pragmatic mix of mechanism-guided and large-scale empirical approaches to accelerate therapeutic discovery and translation.
We pursue an ambitious and pragmatic, modality-agnostic therapeutic strategy spanning genetic medicines, molecular and pharmacologic therapies, cell and immune-based interventions, and engineered biological systems, in close collaboration with leading academic and biotech partners across the U.S. and abroad. The Institute is established as a nonprofit, backed by substantial long-term capital committed directly to the mission. Where strategically valuable, we may pursue mission-aligned for-profit ventures, spin-outs, and partnerships to accelerate therapeutic development and patient impact.
We are a small but rapidly growing team of approximately 20, scaling to 40–50 over the next year across labs and offices in Redwood City, CA and Cambridge, MA, driven by scientific rigor, translational urgency, and a patient-anchored mandate.
We are seeking a Clinical Research Scientist to support clinical research efforts focused on identifying and evaluating therapeutic interventions for patients with interstitial lung disease. This role will bridge laboratory research programs and clinical translation, working closely with the Institute’s network of clinical collaborators and advisors.
ResponsibilitiesClinical Opportunity Evaluation
Evaluate therapeutic opportunities emerging from primary patient data, literature searches, AI-assisted research, and laboratory findings.
Identify interventions — pharmaceutical, surgical, cell-based, or other approaches — that could change the treatment course for patients with interstitial lung disease.
Assess feasibility, risk, and potential benefit of novel interventions for rare lung disease patients.
Monitor emerging clinical data and trial results relevant to the Institute’s patient populations and therapeutic programs.
Clinical Program Support
Support development and execution of clinical studies, including n-of-1 and small cohort efforts in rare lung diseases.
Coordinate with clinical sites and physician collaborators on study design, patient enrollment, and data collection.
Help design and implement clinical protocols that balance scientific rigor with the realities of rare disease research.
Work with transplant-related advisors and collaborators where applicable.
Clinical Data Analysis and Synthesis
Analyze patient data, medical records, and clinical outcomes to identify patterns and therapeutic opportunities.
Synthesize findings from multiple data sources, including genomic data, imaging, pulmonary function tests, pathology, and literature.
Prepare clinical summaries and reports for internal teams, advisors, and collaborators.
Maintain a working understanding of standard-of-care treatments for interstitial lung disease, including pharmaceutical options, oxygen therapy, and supportive therapies.
Collaboration and Communication
Serve as a liaison between the Institute and clinicians, clinician-scientists, and clinical collaborators.
Communicate effectively with physicians and researchers managing programs or advising the organization.
Coordinate with internal scientific, regulatory, and operational teams to ensure clinical insights inform program development.
Independent Project Management
Operate independently on clinical research projects while taking direction from scientific and clinical leadership.
Demonstrate excellent attention to detail and strong judgment in clinical research work products.
Manage multiple projects simultaneously in a dynamic environment.
Required
Advanced degree such as MD, PhD, MS, or equivalent, with clinical research experience.
Relevant experience in pulmonary medicine, interstitial lung disease, transplant medicine, clinical research, or translational medicine.
Strong understanding of lung disease, particularly interstitial lung diseases and pulmonary fibrosis.
Working knowledge of standard-of-care treatments for ILD, including pharmaceutical interventions, oxygen therapy, and supportive therapies.
Demonstrated ability to work independently and manage complex projects with multiple stakeholders.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
Preferred
Experience with transplant-related clinical work or research.
Background in rare diseases or personalized medicine.
Existing network of relationships with pulmonologists, transplant physicians, or ILD specialists.
Familiarity with clinical trial design and related operational considerations.
Experience working with primary patient data and clinical cohorts.
Understanding of genomic medicine or precision medicine approaches to lung disease.
This position may be remote, hybrid, or on-site depending on candidate location and Institute needs. Candidates based in the San Francisco Bay Area, Boston/Cambridge area, or North Carolina are of particular interest, though strong candidates in other locations will also be considered. Some travel to clinical sites, collaborator institutions, and Institute locations may be required.
About the RoleThis role is well suited to someone who combines clinical curiosity, strong analytical judgment, and careful execution. The Clinical Research Scientist will help the Institute translate disparate sources of data into practical therapeutic and clinical opportunities for patients with serious lung disease.
