The Float Phlebotomist provides expert blood collection and specimen preparation services while traveling between multiple locations. This role focuses on performing high-quality venipuncture and other specimen collections, preparing and processing specimens according to established protocols, and ensuring patients feel comfortable and informed throughout the process. • Perform blood draws using straight needles and butterfly needles, ensuring minimal discomfort and a positive experience for patients across a wide demographic, including adults and pediatric patients.
• Collect and store blood and other specimens, such as urine or fecal samples, in strict accordance with established procedures and laboratory protocols.
• Explain venipuncture and other specimen collection procedures clearly and courteously to patients so they understand the process and feel at ease.
• Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes accurately and verify all test requisitions or computer-generated labels against orders to ensure 100% accuracy.
• Label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by specific test orders, following protocols to maintain the integrity of all samples.
• Store specimens at the required temperatures, place samples in appropriate collection containers or tubes, and follow all handling and transport procedures to preserve specimen quality.
• Package specimens for transport according to protocol, ensuring they are secure, correctly labeled, and compliant with all regulatory and safety standards.
• Fully understand and interpret physicians’ orders to ensure proper test selection, specimen handling, and processing.
• Record maintenance data, perform decontamination procedures, and maintain cleanliness and organization of the work area in accordance with safety and quality standards.
• Understand and comply with OSHA and DEP regulations related to phlebotomy, specimen handling, and workplace safety.
• Wear appropriate attire and required protective equipment to maintain a safe and professional environment.
• Attend annual department trainings to stay current with procedures, safety standards, and regulatory requirements.
• Answer telephone calls professionally and read laboratory results to address inquiries accurately and efficiently.
• Update patient information and maintain accurate documentation, demonstrating strong administrative skills and attention to detail.
• Travel as a float phlebotomist to cover multiple locations, adjusting to different sites and workflows while maintaining consistent quality of service.

• 2–3 years of experience performing blood draws in a clinical or laboratory setting.
• Proficiency in phlebotomy techniques, including venipuncture using straight needles and butterfly needles.
• Demonstrated experience with specimen labeling, centrifuging, splitting, freezing, and packaging for transport.
• Ability to collect and handle various specimen types, including blood, urine, and fecal samples, according to established procedures.
• Strong attention to detail and administrative skills for accurately matching requisitions, verifying orders, updating patient information, and documenting procedures.
• Thorough understanding of physicians’ orders and the ability to follow detailed laboratory protocols.
• Knowledge of and compliance with OSHA and DEP regulations related to safety, infection control, and specimen handling.
• Ability to communicate clearly and courteously with patients, explaining procedures and addressing concerns.
• Capability to read and relay laboratory results over the phone with accuracy and professionalism.
• Willingness and ability to travel between multiple locations as a float phlebotomist.

• Experience performing infant and pediatric blood draws is a plus.
• Prior experience with specimen processing and handling in a laboratory environment.
• Comfort working with a wide range of patient populations and adapting communication style as needed.
• Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple tasks in a fast-paced setting.
• Flexibility to work varying schedules within the outlined hours, including every other Saturday.
• Interest in a role that offers variety, in-state travel, and changing work locations.

This is a float role that requires regular travel to multiple locations, including Portchester, Mount Vernon, White Plains, Yonkers, and the Bronx. The work is performed in clinical and laboratory settings where phlebotomy, specimen collection, and specimen processing are routine. The schedule typically includes Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. as needed; Tuesday and Thursday from 8:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. as needed; and every other Saturday from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. The environment involves working with laboratory equipment such as needles, collection tubes, centrifuges, and specimen storage systems, as well as computer systems for requisitions and patient information. Appropriate professional attire and required protective equipment are expected to maintain a safe and professional clinical environment. The role does not require holiday or vacation coverage, making it attractive for candidates who prefer a consistent, structured schedule while enjoying variety in work locations.

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Mount Vernon, NY.

The pay range for this position is $20.00 - $24.00/hr.

Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
