Job Summary Milwaukee Public Schools is actively recruiting qualified candidates for the Speech Language Pathologist position. A Milwaukee Public Schools Speech Language Pathologist refers to the professional who applies the principles, methods and procedures for the assessment, prognosis, counseling, instruction, habilitation or rehabilitation related to the development and disorders of speech, voice or language production and comprehension. Responsibilities Essential Functions/Core Competencies The Speech language pathologist will perform from among the following functions:
Pay, Benefits, & Work Schedule The salary range for the Full-Time Speech Language Pathologist position starts at $61,211.73 and increases according to a set salary schedule which is based on years' of work experience as a fully licensed Speech Language Pathologist. This work schedule for this position is 10-month/191 work days during the school year.

Qualifications Eligible applicants MUST :
- Master's Degree in Communicative Disorders or similar
- Completed Clinical Experience in a K-12 school setting
- Applicants must be licensed by the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction to teach this specific grade level and / or content area.
Responsibilities Essential Functions/Core Competencies The Speech language pathologist will perform from among the following functions:
- Select appropriate assessment instruments for differential diagnosis of suspected speech and/or language impairments.
- Determine a child's speech/language weaknesses and strengths and subsequent needs for remediation based on speech/language assessment of, but not limited to the following areas:
- Articulation/phonology
- Morphology, syntax and semantics
- Oral motor and related functions
- Voice/fluency
- Pragmatics
- Auditory processing
- Gross motor (in conjunction with the physical education teacher)
- Critical thinking and verbal reasoning
- Metalinguistics
- Pure tone air conduction hearing screening
- Receptive/expressive communication in oral, written, graphic, and manual modalities
- Augmentative communication needs
- Social aspects of communication
- Collect data from:
- Classroom observation/teacher input
- Teacher questionnaire
- Review of cumulative records (including previous speech records)
- Case history via family interviews
- Formal and informal language testing
- Request bilingual testing when the need arises.
- Analyze and interpret data received from an assessment of the speech/language and hearing function of children referred to the school IEP team by parents, agencies and school personnel
- Grow professionally by keeping abreast of new developments in the field by reading research and professional journals, attending seminars, conventions and other continuing education experiences and applying these learned experiences to therapy intervention and assessment.
- Assess, select, develop and provide services supporting the effective use of augmentative and alternative communication systems and support classroom staff in their implementation.
- During the weekly half-day of office time, collaborate, consult and request information form:
- Other health professionals, including occupational and physical therapists, nurses, doctors, dentists, audiologists, etc.
- School personnel including regular and special education teachers, principals, psychologists, social workers, etc.
- Other speech pathologists with expertise in our field of work (i.e. phonology, augmentative communications, disfluency, etc.)
- Plan and conduct teacher/child/parent conferences.
- Participate in university teacher training programs on a voluntary basis for student teachers and observers.
- Attend monthly departmental meetings and special in-services.
- Provide supervision, on a voluntary basis, of the Clinical Fellowship Year for colleagues seeking to earn the Certificate of Clinical Competence.
- Share information and ideas with other colleagues through state, local and national professional organizations.
- Increase public awareness and advocate for the population served by speech pathologists.
- Maintain Wisconsin DPI licensure as a speech and language pathologist.
