Desired Qualifications

• Applicants must possess a valid Delaware Driver's Certificate with a passenger transportation endorsement, air brake endorsement, and a valid D.O.T. approved medical certificate.
• Have an annual physical examination and a negative TB test or satisfactory chest x-ray.
• Must pass a successful pre-employment drug screening.
• Have no more than 6 points on the driver's record.
• No conviction for Driving Under Influence of Alcohol or Drugs, or suspension, revocation, or license disqualification for moving violations, in the past five years.
• Must not have ever been convicted of a Class A or Class B felony, or a felony based on causing death, a felony sexual offense, or a felony against public administration.
• Must not have ever been convicted of any crime against a child.
• Must not have ever been convicted of any drug-related crime.
• Must pass a successful background check including Child Protection Registry.
• Applicants must operate all types and sizes of school buses safely and on a specific time schedule in varied and complex topographical, weather, urban traffic, and rural conditions.
• High School Diploma or Equivalent.
• Must be 21 years of age.

Salary: In accordance with State of Delaware and local salary schedules, based upon experience and degree NOTE: Direct Deposit of pay is a condition of hire. If a new employee does not wish to participate in this program, an offer of employment cannot be made.

Reports To: Transportation Supervisor

Responsibilities of Position

• Operates assigned school buses on assigned trips in accordance with printed trip schedules and in accordance with specified stop, sequence, and time schedules. Develops, maintains, and regularly updates current student and trip manifests.
• Boards, transports, and discharges passengers.
• Regular attendance is an essential function of the position.
• Report to work as scheduled or before in order to prepare the bus and start the route on time regardless of weather conditions.
• May operate a mechanized wheelchair lift. May lift handicapped passengers and assist passengers into and out of bus as required by Transportation Services Department policy and procedure.
• Monitors the operational condition and safety of vehicle accessories of assigned buses on a daily basis; monitors gauges and sensors while operating a bus and reports discrepancies to initiate corrective actions.
• Practices non-aggressive, defensive driving techniques. Operates a school bus in a safe and efficient manner on the established bus route at all times and observes all traffic laws and safety regulations for school buses.
• Monitors, conducts, and responds to communications with the Transportation Operations staff via two-radio.
• Report any mechanical failure or operational issues to the Transportation Supervisor or designee. Complete and submit all required paperwork for students' behavior, bus maintenance, and pre-trip and post-trip.
• Performs required fueling of bus at designated location.
• Keep the buses clean and in an orderly condition.
• Report incidents, accidents, or misconduct immediately to Supervisor or designee as required.
• Maintains effective professional working relationships with pupils, parents/guardians, and district staff.
• Enforces district policy and procedure in maintaining discipline on buses. Resolve conflict and maintain discipline of children on board buses.
• Maintains working knowledge of and complies with laws and regulations pertaining to pupil transportation.
• Maintains cleanliness of windows and interior of bus on a daily basis; may wash bus exterior.
• Periodically participates in mandated meetings and in-service programs during traditional and non-traditional workdays and work hours as required by the department.
• Displays and enforces approved standard of personal hygiene and grooming, including appearance, cleanliness and appropriate dress code according to the Smyrna School District dress code policy.
