The unit cares for a wide variety of medical patients with an average length of stay of 1 to 4 days. Surgical care focuses on orthopedic procedures, including spine and joint surgeries, as well as ENT surgeries. Abdominal surgery overflow may also be managed on this unit. Patient ratios are typically 1:3 to 1:5 during the day and evening shifts, and 1:5 to 1:8 during the night shift. Strong communication and teamwork skills are essential in this fast-paced, high-acuity environment. Support on the unit includes charge nurses, unit secretaries, and 24/7 hospitalist and respiratory therapist availability. Centralized telemetry monitoring and assistance from phlebotomy staff for blood draws are also provided. Technicians are available to assist with glucose checks, vital signs, and basic activities of daily living. Charting is completed using the EPIC system, and familiarity with Alaris and GE monitors will be beneficial. Shifts are scheduled six weeks in advance, with rotations every other weekend and expectations for one holiday per contract period. All staff must adhere to a fatigue policy that limits working hours to ensure employee well-being. The culture is characterized by amazing staff interactions and excellent teamwork.
