Director of Operations – Health & Welfare Benefits Los Angeles, CA | Hybrid (3 days onsite / 2 days remote) Monday–Friday | 9:00 AM–5:30 PM PST $125,000–$150,000 base salary + comprehensive benefits We are partnering with a mission-driven organization serving thousands of employees and their families through a dedicated health and welfare benefits plan to identify an experienced Director of Operations. This is a highly visible leadership opportunity for an operations professional who understands health plans, employee benefits, member services, compliance, and organizational operations and is excited to make a meaningful impact on the people the organization serves. About the Role The Director of Operations will oversee the day-to-day administration and operational effectiveness of a benefits plan and administrative office. This individual will provide strategic and hands‑on leadership across plan administration, member and employer services, technology, facilities, vendor management, compliance, and staff development. You will work closely with executive leadership, internal teams, external partners, vendors, and a Board of Trustees to ensure the organization operates efficiently, compliantly, and with a strong focus on participant and employer experience. Key Responsibilities Lead day-to-day administration and operations of the benefits plan and administrative office Analyze operational data, metrics, and performance and develop recommendations for improvement Oversee technology systems, vendors, software providers, data security, and operational controls Lead and improve member and employer services, including call center operations, appeals, complaints, and issue resolution Ensure participant communications, notices, policies, procedures, and documentation are accurate and compliant Identify and implement process improvements to enhance service quality and operational efficiency Oversee facilities, property management, workplace safety, maintenance, and contracted services Recruit, hire, train, coach, and develop staff Partner with leadership, legal counsel, vendors, and other functional areas on strategic and operational initiatives Coordinate and participate in Board of Trustee meetings, including agendas, materials, minutes, and follow‑up Support short‑and long‑term strategic, operational, and administrative planning Manage external relationships, contracts, and service agreements Travel occasionally as needed What We're Looking For Required: 3–5+ years of experience in a health plan or employee benefits call center in a Manager‑level role Bachelor's degree in healthcare administration, business, operations, or a related field, or equivalent experience Strong business acumen and analytical skills Experience interpreting and auditing information, policies, and regulatory requirements Strong proficiency with Microsoft Office, particularly Excel, PowerPoint, Word, Outlook, and Teams Experience overseeing IT systems, technology vendors, office systems, facilities, property management, workplace operations, or related vendor services; ability to establish operational standards, monitor performance, manage issues, and identify opportunities for improvement. Preferred: Project management experience in a growth‑oriented environment Extensive knowledge of employee benefit plans and regulations, including ERISA, DOL, IRC, HIPAA, and ACA Experience with plan design and interpretation Board‑level meeting coordination and executive‑level administrative support Experience managing IT systems, vendors, document management, and office technology Experience in a Taft‑Hartley or collective bargaining environment CEBS, IFEBP, project management, or Six Sigma certification We're looking for someone who is: Strategic – able to turn complex information and data into practical, measurable action plans Analytical – comfortable researching, auditing, interpreting data, and developing recommendations Solutions‑oriented – able to assess problems, develop options, and drive resolution Highly organized – capable of managing multiple complex priorities and deadlines Collaborative – comfortable working across teams and with leadership, vendors, legal partners, and stakeholders An effective communicator – confident in both written communication and presentations Proactive – someone who anticipates needs and takes ownership rather than waiting to be directed Mission‑driven – motivated by the opportunity to directly improve benefits and services for the people an organization serves $125,000–$150,000 base salary, with potential flexibility for an exceptional candidate.
