• Shift / Schedule: 12-Hour Nights; 18:45 – 07:15 (3×12 Hours); Every Other Weekend required

Job Summary

This is a Neuro ICU travel nursing contract at a Comprehensive Stroke Center. The unit serves a high-acuity patient population with a primary focus on stroke patients (ischemic, hemorrhagic [SAH]), along with SDH, craniotomies, carotid stents, carotid endarterectomies, aneurysm coiling/clipping, seizures, depth electrodes, and myasthenia gravis. The unit operates at ratios of 2:1, with the flexibility to flex up to 3:1 during high census, and nurses must be comfortable with this if needed. The average daily census is 11–12. First-time travelers will not be accepted for this assignment.

Key Responsibilities

• Provide nursing care to high-acuity Neuro ICU patients including those with strokes (ischemic, hemorrhagic [SAH]), SDH, craniotomies, carotid stents, carotid endarterectomies, aneurysm coiling/clipping, seizures, depth electrodes, and myasthenia gravis
• Manage ventilated patients and maintain care of patients on continuous IV sedation
• Perform IV starts and manage central lines
• Interpret and manage dysrhythmias
• Administer blood products
• Monitor and manage intracranial pressure (ICP) including use of external ventricular drains (EVD) and lumbar drains
• Manage CVA/Acute Stroke patients — stroke patients represent one of the largest patient populations on this unit
• Provide post-neurosurgery management
• Operate and manage specialty equipment: EVD, Lumbar Drains, Camino, LICOX, NICOM, and Arctic Sun
• Utilize unit systems: Pyxis, EPIC, and SBAR
• Adhere to isolation precautions and proper use of PPE
• Float as required per unit needs
• Follow scheduling per unit needs; RTO maximum of 7 days for AYA Auto Offer

• Interpretation of dysrhythmias

• External ventricular drains (EVD)
• ICP Monitoring
• Post-neurosurgery management
• Care of ventilated patient

• Comfort with 2:1 patient ratios, with ability to flex to 3:1 during high census

Education Requirements

• ACLS certification required
• BCLS certification required
• NIH Stroke Scale (NIH) certification required
• Flu vaccination required (medical/religious exemptions only)

Required Experience

• Minimum 2 years of experience in a Neuro ICU setting — no exceptions; candidates with fewer than 2 years in Neuro ICU will not be accepted
• Strong Neuro Critical Care background required — general ICU experience does not qualify
• First-time travelers will not be accepted for this assignment

Work Environment / Physical Requirements

• Shift: 12-Hour Nights; 18:45 – 07:15
• Schedule: Every Other Weekend required
• Float Requirement: Yes
• Call Requirement: None
• Patient ratios: 2:1 (can flex up to 3:1 in high census; nurse must be comfortable with this if needed)
• Average Daily Census: 11–12
• Unit Orientation: 24.0 Hours (2 days or 2 nights)
• Scrubs: Navy blue and white
• Unit is a Comprehensive Stroke Center

Important Notes

• RTO (Return to Origin) after booking is NOT allowed and is NOT allowed to be worked out onsite. Any call-offs or additional RTO on unit could result in a contract cancellation and DNR (Do Not Rehire).
• RTO maximum: 7 days for AYA Auto Offer.
• Candidates must pass EKG testing prior to start for this specialty.
• Candidates who do not have a minimum of 2 years of Neuro ICU experience should not be submitted.
• Candidates without a strong Neuro Critical Care background (not just general ICU) should not be submitted.
