POSITION TITLE: PARAEDUCATOR

DEPARTMENT: Bristol Eastern High School REPORTS TO: Special Education Teacher SUMMARY: Assist in small group and individual pupil instruction.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Assist students with instruction under the direction of the special education teacher. Assist teacher in maintaining discipline. Assist teacher with instructional activities. Escort students from room to room. Assist students with toileting as required. Work with both special education and regular students. Assist teaching staff in implementation of IEP. Supervise students while at recess and lunch. Assist students with classroom assignments. Copy materials for instructional purposes. Assist teacher in filing material and preparing all necessary paperwork. Alert teachers to observed problems. Support students with toileting as required. PMT required.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education and/or Experience: High School Diploma or General Education Degree. Two years of college credit or an associate’s degree (or higher), or successful completion of a paraprofessional assessment covering content knowledge in mathematics, reading, and writing. Language Skills: Ability to read, comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos; write simple correspondence; effectively present information in one‑on‑one and small group settings. Mathematical Skills: Ability to add and subtract two‑digit numbers; multiply and divide with 10s and 100s; perform operations using American money and weight, volume, distance units. Computer Skills: Basic knowledge and experience with job‑related computer hardware and software applications. Reasoning Ability: Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed written or oral instructions; deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations. Other Skills and Abilities: Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, staff, and community; perform duties with awareness of district requirements and Board of Education policies.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

The role requires sitting, speaking, hearing; standing, walking, climbing, balancing; stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling; pushing items up to fifty (50) pounds and occasionally lifting up to fifty pounds, with assistance for heavier lifting. Requires close, distance, and peripheral vision.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

Typical classroom noise level; work throughout school building, on school grounds, and occasionally off campus. Responsible for safety and wellbeing of students in charge.

COMPENSATION & HOURS
