Job Description Title: Full-Time Breastfeeding Peer Counselor FLSA Category: Non‑Exempt Reports To: WIC Director Supervises: Non‑supervisory Position Date Issued: April 2005 Date Revised: February 2006, June 2019, May 2024, August 2024 Job Summary The WIC Full‑Time Breastfeeding Peer Counselor (BFPC) is a paraprofessional support person who will provide individual in‑person and telephone counseling, and lead group educational classes about breastfeeding for pregnant and breastfeeding women. Essential Functions Demonstrates excellent communication and interpersonal skills to carry out breastfeeding support and services in the clinic efficiently. Counsels WIC pregnant and breastfeeding mothers about breastfeeding benefits, positioning, and other basic information by telephone, in‑person appointments, group classes, and support groups as per WIC policy. Provides basic breastfeeding information and support using approved WIC materials, helping to facilitate successful breastfeeding and prevent common problems. Follows up with participants at scheduled intervals as per WIC policy. Keeps accurate records of all contacts in the MD WOW computer system. Offers breast pumps, discusses collection and storage, and documents issuance accurately. Retrieves loaner breast pumps and records details in MD WOW. Creates a breastfeeding‑friendly clinic environment with bulletin boards and materials. Provides referrals for infant or maternal conditions beyond scope of practice, including medical, nutritional, domestic violence, or other impairments. Assists in promoting breastfeeding through special projects and duties assigned. Participates in continuing education related to lactation. Adheres to State of Maryland WIC Breastfeeding Peer Counselor Program policies and procedures. Participates in outreach activities as assigned. Attends team‑staff meetings, in‑service meetings, and applicable workshops. Works closely with the Breastfeeding Peer Counselor Coordinator and WIC Director on assigned duties. Performs other duties as assigned. Minimum Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Minimum of one year counseling breastfeeding women. High school diploma or GED. Completion of State of Maryland Breastfeeding Peer Counselor training or orientation. Personal experience breastfeeding for at least six months. Excellent oral and written communication skills. Bilingual (Spanish speaking) preferred but not required. Strong interpersonal skills. Proficient in Windows Microsoft Office Suite. Communication Internally: Superior customer‑service skills, tact in working with patients, families, and visitors. Weeks team environment with other clinical staff. Externally: Excellent verbal communication when greeting participants and answering calls. Working Conditions Typical medical office setting. Driving between health centers required. Assignments and schedules may change with reasonable notice and can include weekend hours. Physical Requirements Prolonged sitting at a computer terminal. Occasional bending, stooping, and stretching. Eye‑hand coordination and manual dexterity for computer, telephone, and office equipment. Normal hearing and eyesight for written communication and phone or in‑person interactions. Occasional lifting up to 25 pounds.
