CRIMINAL INVESTIGATOR

JOB SUMMARY

This position is located in the D.C. Department of Corrections, Director DOC, Office of Internal Affairs.

The incumbent in this role is responsible for conducting a wide range of very complex investigations of all extraordinary or unusual incidents that have been determined as one that differs from the normal routine and established procedures that involve conducting interviews, gathering facts and evidence, and testifying in court.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Conducts a wide range of complex interviews designed to afford the subject under investigation a full opportunity to explain, provide documentation, or comment on derogatory or discrepant information. Participates in joint criminal investigations with the department and other law enforcements, when required to strengthen inter-agency case building. Conducts complex interviews with supervisors, co-workers, relatives, associates, former employers, and others who may furnish relevant information concerning case assignments.

Prepares narrative, and audio and video reports on investigative findings for submission to the Chief of Investigative Services. Provides testimony in court and Grand Jury proceedings concerning investigations. Maintains an effective and cooperative working relationship with Federal and local investigative agencies, mainly with the D.C. Metropolitan Police Department, Office of Attorney General, Federal Bureau of Investigation, Corporation Counsel, and other entities as needed to support coordinated investigations.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EDUCATION

Specialized Experience is experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled. To be creditable, one (1) year of specialized experience must have been equivalent to at least the next lower grade level in the normal line of progression.

LICENSES AND CERTIFICATIONS

Must possess and maintain during employment a valid driver's license.

WORKING CONDITIONS/ENVIRONMENT

Work is primarily performed within confinement settings during the conduct of investigations but also involves working in the office setting.

OTHER SIGNIFICANT FACTS

Tour of Duty: Monday Friday 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Flexibility in work scheduled may be required. Twenty-four (24) seven (7) day response and /or return to duty may be required.

Promotion Potential : No Known Promotion Potential.

Duration of Appointment : Career Service Regular Appointment.

Collective Bargaining Unit : This position is not covered under a collective bargaining agreement.

Position Designation: The incumbent of this position will be subject to enhanced suitability screening pursuant to chapter 4 of the DC Personnel Regulations, Suitability-Safety Sensitive . This position requires a background check and drug screening; therefore, you may be required to provide information about your criminal history and pass a drug screening in order to be appointed for this position.

TB test will be required for the entry on duty.

Emergency Designation: This position has been designated as an Emergency position under the provisions of District Personnel Manual Chapter 12. As such, individual(s) in this position may be required in emergency situations to perform crucial duties that are vital to the continuity of medical facilities, public safety, emergency services, and/or other crucial operations. Employees designated as an emergency employee based on the nature and circumstances of a particular declared emergency. An emergency employee who has been designated and activated will be called in to work, required to stay at work, or required to telework, if approved to do so, during the particular emergency situation.

Residency Preference: When claiming residency preference, you are required, and must agree in writing, to maintain bona fide District residency for a period of seven (7) consecutive years from the effective date of employment. You will be required to present documents (proof) to show District residency and failure to maintain bona-fide District residency for the seven-year (7) period will result in forfeiture of employment.
