Position Summary

The Correctional Medical Physician at Essex County Correctional Facility, located in Newark, NJ, serves as the lead physician at a designated correctional facility, overseeing and managing medical program activities in alignment with CFG Health Systems’ goals, objectives, and industry standards. The physician ensures high-quality inmate patient care, collaborates with the Health Services Administrator, and acts as a liaison between correctional officials, public agencies, and the company. This role includes evaluating clinical programs, supervising staff, and ensuring compliance with contractual, regulatory, and accreditation standards. Evening shift 3-11

Position Requirements

Education & Licensure

\n
• Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) from an accredited medical school.
\n
• Completion of a U.S.-based residency program.
\n
• Current, unrestricted license to practice medicine in the state of the assigned facility.
\n
• Active and unrestricted prescriptive authority with DEA and Controlled Dangerous Substance (CDS) registrations.
\n

Experience

\n
• Minimum of two years of public health experience.
\n
• Previous correctional healthcare experience preferred.
\n

Skills & Competencies

\n
• Strong critical thinking, clinical assessment, and decision-making skills.
\n
• Assertive, empathetic, and objective approach to patient care.
\n
• Excellent interpersonal, communication, and customer service skills.
\n
• Proficiency in Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel, and Electronic Health Records (EHR).
\n
• Ability to command respect and confidence of both inmates and staff.
\n
• Active CPR certification.
\n

Functional Demands

\n
• Ability to pass all required health screenings and security clearances.
\n
• May be required to work nights, weekends, and holidays.
\n
• Provide 24-hour on-call coverage for nursing staff and detainee/inmate care.
\n

Position Responsibilities

\n
• Perform and document routine and sick-call examinations according to NCCHC, ACA, PBNDS, NJ 10-A, and CFG Health Systems standards.
\n
• Supervise and manage the Medical Unit to ensure effective healthcare delivery.
\n
• Order and interpret diagnostic studies, laboratory tests, and ancillary services as needed.
\n
• Provide treatments, prescribe medications, and manage health conditions within state regulations and approved formulary guidelines.
\n
• Document all patient care accurately, thoroughly, and timely.
\n
• Promote a therapeutic, professional, and ethical environment for inmates.
\n
• Develop, implement, and supervise policies, procedures, and protocols for inmate healthcare.
\n
• Determine appropriate levels of care and required medical equipment.
\n
• Collaborate with correctional staff, healthcare providers, and administrative leadership to ensure continuity of care and compliance with standards.
\n

• Maintains security clearance for the assigned facility
