Our technology brings collection records, market data, and professional appraisal workflows together in a single platform.The RoleWe are seeking an experienced Contemporary Art Appraiser to join our growing appraisal team.This is an opportunity to work with some of the strongest collections of contemporary art globally while practicing appraisal in a fundamentally modern environment. Our appraisers work directly within Appraisal Bureau's proprietary platform, using technology-enabled and AI-supported workflows designed to make research, market analysis, valuation, and report production more efficient and rigorous.Technology supports the process, while professional expertise and judgment remain at the center of every valuation. The appraiser will research and value contemporary artworks, analyze comparable sales and broader market data, and prepare well-supported, USPAP-compliant appraisal reports across a range of purposes.The position is particularly well suited to an established appraiser who wants to practice at a high level while working with novel technology and helping shape the next generation of art valuation infrastructure.ResponsibilitiesResearch and value contemporary artworks for fair market value, replacement value, and other appropriate valuation purposesPrepare rigorous, USPAP-compliant appraisal reports for charitable contributions, estate and tax planning, insurance, lending, financial reporting, and other client needsConduct in-depth research into artists, individual works, provenance, exhibition history, literature, and relevant marketsAnalyze auction results, gallery and private-market information, comparable sales, and broader market trendsDevelop and clearly articulate valuation methodologies and conclusionsWork directly within Appraisal Bureau's platform and utilize our technology-enabled and AI-supported appraisal workflowsCollaborate with clients and the broader Appraisal Bureau team to establish appraisal scope and gather necessary documentationManage multiple appraisal projects and deadlines while maintaining a high level of accuracy and attention to detailMaintain complete research, comparable-sale, and valuation documentation within the Appraisal Bureau platformStay current on contemporary art markets, artists, galleries, auction houses, and relevant market developmentsContribute to the continued development of Appraisal Bureau's appraisal methodologies, data, and technology-enabled workflowsQualificationsProfessional fine-art appraisal experience and a strong working knowledge of contemporary art and its markets are required.Accreditation or certification is required, particularly through the Appraisers Association of America (AAA). Accreditation or certification through the International Society of Appraisers (ISA) or American Society of Appraisers (ASA) will also be considered.The ideal candidate will also have:Current USPAP training and a strong understanding of professional appraisal standardsDemonstrated experience valuing contemporary artStrong knowledge of the primary and secondary art marketsExcellent research, analytical, and writing skillsThe ability to evaluate comparable sales and translate complex market information into defensible valuation conclusionsExceptional attention to detail and a high standard of professional judgmentStrong organizational and project-management skillsComfort working independently while collaborating closely with a teamInterest in technology and enthusiasm for incorporating new tools and AI-supported workflows into professional appraisal practiceHigh standards of discretion and confidentiality when working with significant private collections and sensitive financial informationLocation & CompensationThe position is based in New York City, with a hybrid working arrangement. We are also open to a remote arrangement for an exceptional candidate with the appropriate appraisal experience and credentials.Base salary is $80,000–$90,000, depending on experience and qualifications.
