GARNER VA CLINIC and CLAYTON VA CLINIC-The Supervisory Medical Support Assistant (MSA) position serves as the direct line supervisor for all Medical Support Assistant (MSA) and Lead Medical Support Assistant Staff and is a foundational role within the VHA Patient Aligned Care Team (PACT) initiative to include all interdisciplinary clinics, call centers and all other areas that support the initiative. Patient care is delivered in a team based model known as the teamlet.

The Supervisory MSA plans and directs programs at medical centers and/or satellite outpatient clinics and has full supervisory responsibility. Assignments at this level include, but are not limited to: assigning and evaluating the work of subordinate staff; resolving complex problems to ensure patient services are met; evaluating new products, equipment, and systems in order to make recommendations for improved operations; identifying educations or training needs; making final decisions on selections; educating performance, and taking disciplinary action when necessary. The employee has full administrative and professional responsibility for planning and directing MSA's activities. Responsible for extracting and analyzing data in order to provide reports in support of performance measures to senior management.

Pay: Competitive salary and regular salary increases

Paid Time Off: 37-50 days of annual paid time offer per year (13-26 days of annual leave, 13 days of sick leave, 11 paid Federal holidays per year)

Parental Leave: After 12 months of employment, up to 12 weeks of paid parental leave in connection with the birth, adoption, or foster care placement of a child.

Qualifications

Basic Requirements :

• United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
• English Language Proficiency:MSAs must be proficient in spoken and written English in accordance with VA Handbook 5005, Part II, Chapter 3, Section A, paragraph 3.j.

  • High school diploma or transcript (including homeschooling)
  • General Education Development (GED) certificate
  • Proficiency certificate issued by a State or Territorial Board or Department of Education
  • Post-high school education
  • You do not have one of the education levels listed above, but you were in the Medical Support Assistant occupation (GS-0679) on a permanent appointment with the Department of Veterans Affairs as of February 5, 2026, meeting all qualification requirements as part of the grandfathering provision

May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupation and meet the criteria).

Grade Determinations :

Supervisory Medical Support Assistant, GS-07 .

(1) Experience . One year of creditable experience equivalent to the next lower grade.

(2) Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs) .

In addition to the experience above, the candidate must demonstrate the following KSAs:

(a) Ability to provide the full range of administrative and supervisory duties in a patient support setting, which includes assignment of work, performance evaluations, selection of staff, and recommendation of awards and/or advancements.

(b) Ability to collaborate, communicate, and demonstrate customer service and interpersonal skills with internal and external customers to ensure quality/continuity of care and ensure compliance with established policies and regulations.

(c) Ability to provide briefings, orientations, staff development, and training related to administrative functions in a patient support setting.(d) Ability to delegate authority, evaluate and oversee people and programs, accomplish program goals, and adapt to changing priorities.

Physical Requirements: Work is generally sedentary in nature with some walking, standing and bending. Occasionally requires moderate physical activity, e.g. carrying light items such as books and papers, or lifting boxes or records.
