Educational Interpreter

Educational Interpreter Rate: $28-$30/hr Qualifications: Minimum of a high school diploma or GED equivalent. Must hold a current paraprofessional license (or PEL) with the ISBE. Must meet ISBE educational requirements and have an Intermediate Certificate or a minimum 3.5 EIPA score. Successful completion of fingerprint-based criminal background check (IL State Police and FBI), sex offender and violent youth offender screening, and employment physical. Reports To: Director of Student Support Services Job Goal: To serve as an educational interpreter for deaf/hard-of-hearing students throughout the regular school day by facilitating communication between students with hearing impairments and their hearing peers, the classroom teacher, and other personnel in the school system. Other duties that may be performed when not required to provide interpreting may include participation in meetings as a member of the educational team and other duties to support the educational environment. Performance Responsibilities (Essential): Provides sign-to-voice/voice-to-sign interpreting, which may include American Sign Language (a manually coded form of English) and/or oral interpreting, depending on the student's needs. Participates in educational team meetings, providing insight into the success of communication strategies. Provides interpreting for parent meetings as directed (e.g., PT conference, graduation). These activities/meetings may extend beyond the school day. Provides assistance with orientations to deafness, proper use of interpreting services to hearing students and staff, and/or other in-service training. Consults with the supervisor and classroom teachers on a regular basis. Monitors, on a regular, ongoing basis, the effectiveness of hearing aids and other instruments intended to improve students' ability to receive auditory input, and maintains a log or record of these monitoring activities. Assists the teacher in devising special strategies for reinforcing material skills based on their Individualized Education Plan (IEP). Maintains effective communication with school staff. Assists with the supervision of students during emergency drills, assemblies, recess, and or plan periods, and field trips. Assists students in the library or media center. Alerts the teacher to any problems or special information about an individual student. Participates in training programs and meetings when requested by the administration. Maintains regular attendance and punctuality to ensure teamwork and the completion of job duties essential to the daily operation of the school. Performs other related tasks as assigned by the principal/assistant principal and other district office administrators. Adheres to a professional code of ethics that includes the confidentiality of school-related matters and loyalty to the school district.
