Vice President, Blood Bank, Donor Services, and Apheresis

Overview

The Vice President of Blood Bank, Donor Services, and Apheresis provides executive leadership for the development, planning, implementation, and ongoing operational oversight of Dana-Farber Cancer Institute’s Blood Bank, Donor Services, and Apheresis program. Reporting to the Senior Vice President of Ambulatory Care, the role directs operations across donor recruitment, donor services, customer experience, component manufacturing, product management and distribution, immunohematology reference laboratory, quality control laboratory, materials management, physical operations, Blood Establishment Computer System (BECS) administration, and biomedical engineering to ensure effective, coordinated blood center services. This position is responsible for establishing policies, implementing procedures, and advancing systems and workflows that support program growth, service delivery, operational efficiency, and new product and service development. A central responsibility of the role is to ensure that all departmental processes, procedures, and quality control activities meet applicable accreditation, regulatory, and legal standards, while using data-driven performance metrics to improve customer experience, reduce waste, and strengthen operational performance.

Bachelors Degree; Masters Preferred (Medical Technology, Clinical Laboratory Science, Medical Laboratory Science, or related biological field)

Minimum of 10 years of progressively responsible leadership experience in blood banking, transfusion medicine, donor services, laboratory operations, or a related healthcare environment.

Medical Technologist/Medical Laboratory Scientist (ASCP – American Society for Clinical Pathology) certification or equivalent laboratory certification required. Specialist in Blood Banking (ASCP) preferred.

• Lead the creation, development, strategic planning, implementation, and operational oversight of Dana-Farber Cancer Institute’s Blood Bank, Donor Services, and Apheresis program, including the integration of donor recruitment, donor services, customer experience, manufacturing, laboratory, distribution, and operational support functions.
• Direct all operations of the blood center and related departments, including Marketing Communications, Donor Recruitment, Donor Services, Customer Experience, Component Manufacturing Laboratory, Product Management and Distribution, Immunohematology Reference Laboratory, Quality Control Laboratory, Materials Management, Physical Operations, BECS Administration, and Biomedical Engineering.
• Develop policies and implement procedures specific to blood operations, and update systems, workflows, and operational practices as required by changing federal, state, and local laws, regulations, standards, and accreditation expectations.
• Establish and maintain a strong compliance and regulatory infrastructure for blood bank and apheresis operations by ensuring departmental processes, procedures, and quality control activities are compliant with accreditation and regulatory standards.
• Drive continuous improvement across the blood bank and apheresis program by streamlining workflow, eliminating inefficient or outdated manual processes, reducing controllable product loss across supply chain receipt, collections, manufacturing, testing, and distribution, and improving the Institute’s ability to deliver existing and new products and services to hospital customers.
• Establish annual operational targets and monitor reliable, actionable, data-driven metrics related to customer experience, process efficiency, waste reduction, recovered plasma sales, and overall service performance.
• Direct financial and business operations for the program, including management of the department budget, processing fee and charge guidelines, purchases, software licenses, monthly expenses and revenues, and development and management of contracts and bids in coordination with executive leadership.
• Supervises staff. Hires, develops, and manages staff to achieve organizational goals. Sets clear expectations, delivers feedback, and monitors performance for quality, efficiency, and compliance with policies and procedures. Mentors staff, fosters career growth, and cultivates a positive and          productive work environment.

Pay Transparency Statement

The hiring range is based on market pay structures, with individual salaries determined by factors such as business needs, market conditions, internal equity, and based on the candidate’s relevant experience, skills and qualifications.

For union positions, the pay range is determined by the Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA).
