HPC Architect

AbbVie Information Research seeks an HPC Architect to lead the design and management of on-premises, cloud, and hybrid high-performance computing platforms supporting scientific research. The role requires technical expertise in HPC infrastructure, AWS, Slurm, and containerization, with responsibility for architecture, lifecycle management, security, and cost optimization.
Responsibilities
- Architect and evolve on-premises, cloud, and hybrid HPC platforms including compute, networking, storage, and workload management
- Administer and optimize Slurm workload management, GPU scheduling, and integration with research platforms like Posit
- Design and implement secure container and scientific software environments using Apptainer, Docker, compilers, and scientific libraries
- Lead automation efforts for provisioning, configuration, patching, monitoring, and lifecycle management across HPC infrastructure
- Maintain observability, architecture documentation, standards, and provide technical direction to engineering teams
Requirements
- Bachelor's in Computer Science or related field with 7+ years experience (or equivalent advanced degree with fewer years)
- Expert knowledge of Linux, HPC compute, GPU architectures, MPI, NVIDIA GPUs, and CUDA
- Deep experience with Slurm workload management, scheduling policies, and GPU resource allocation
- Strong expertise in HPC networking (InfiniBand, RDMA, Ethernet) and high-performance storage systems
- Proficiency with Apptainer/Singularity, Docker, and scientific software environments
- Proven experience architecting cloud and hybrid HPC solutions with infrastructure as code
- Leadership experience guiding technical teams and influencing stakeholders across organizational boundaries
