Working Conditions


Successfully completes required training as condition of employment. Maintains the Arduous Fitness Standard in accordance with department policy. The incumbent is required to wear respiratory protection equipment, including self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA). Such as, Cal-OSHA requires that the incumbent be annually medically cleared to be fit-tested for respiratory protection equipment.


May be subject to working nights, weekends, or holidays in support of emergency incidents including travel.

Special Requirements

Within six months of appointment, incumbent is required to have a California Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) Class A or B Commercial Driver License (CDL) with a tank (N) endorsement and passenger (P) endorsement and no restriction for air brakes or standard transmission. New hires that do not possess the appropriate CDL and endorsements are authorized to drive the required vehicles for the purpose of obtaining a commercial license and appropriate endorsements only when an employee with the proper endorsement is present in the vehicle with them.

Positions located at a Camp or requiring the supervision of inmates requires compliance with the Prison Rape Elimination Act. Compliance is determined by completing a Live Scan prior to appointment and during the course of employment to verify the standards of the Code of Federal Regulations Part 115 Prison Rape Elimination Act National Standards are met.

Benefits


Heavy Equipment Mechanic (6834)

This classification is eligible for the following pay:

$5608 - $6723 Base Salary (paid every month)

$67,296 - $80,676 Annual Compensation (plus Fire Mission Pay)*

*Fire Mission Pay: Incumbents receive approximately 10% of base pay paid monthly when fire season is declared for the employee's Unit.

Salary Range B- This range shall apply to incumbents in positions with direct responsibility for work supervision, on-the-job training, and work performance evaluation of at least 2 inmates, wards, or resident workers.

In addition to the above pay items, employees are eligible for medical benefits (health, dental, vision) and may be eligible for other pay differentials.

In July 2025, the State of California implemented the Personal Leave Program (PLP) 2025. This program temporarily reduces employees' monthly base pay in exchange for paid leave credits. This position is subject to PLP 2025 and will have a monthly base pay reduction of 3% in exchange for 5 hours of leave credits through June 2027. The salary ranges shown on this job posting do not reflect the salary reduction.
