Custodian

Incumbent serves as Custodian for the Morgan County Maintenance Department, responsible for maintaining a clean, safe, and sanitary environment within and outside buildings and facilities. This position is 40 hours a week with full benefits.

** DUTIES : **

Performs a variety of cleaning activities according to commercial cleaning and sanitation procedures. Ensures that all assigned areas, such as restrooms, offices, hallways, meeting rooms, and common areas, meet cleanliness and hygiene standards. Ensure compliance with OSHA regulation and county safety policy/procedures.

Performs floor/carpet care including mopping, sweeping, vacuuming, stripping waxing, buffing, burnishing, carpet cleaning, stain removal, and extraction. Cleans floor mats as needed.

Deep cleans and disinfects high traffic areas and ensures restrooms are sanitized and hygienic.

Dusts, empties trash, cleans walls, disinfects surfaces, washes interior and exterior windows and blinds, and mirrors, and polishes furniture in assigned areas.

Reports any necessary repairs or replacements promptly.

Maintains supply inventories, restocks supplies, and safely handles cleaning chemicals according to data sheet guidelines.

Assists with setting up and breaking down tables, chairs, and equipment for meetings, events, or facility activities.

Performs facility grounds maintenance duties such as trash/debris removal, cleaning outdoor seating areas, and weeding. Assists with snow and ice removal and applying salt, ensuring safe entrances during winter conditions.

Assists with delivery intake and delivery of supplies to County personnel.

Operates a variety of equipment in performance of duties, including but not limited to commercial custodial equipment, power washer, floor cleaner/buffer, auto scrubber, burnisher, carpet cleaner, vacuum cleaner, shop vac, and other equipment as needed.

Responds to inquiries and resolves complaints addressed by the public or other County employees.

Ensures proper care and storage of maintenance equipment and cleaning chemicals.

Performs related duties as assigned.

I. SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE :

High school diploma or HSE required. Two (2) years of responsible experience in custodial operations, or equivalent combination of education and experience preferred.

Must be at least 18 years of age.

Possession of or ability to obtain and maintain required training and certifications, including but not limited to OSHA General Industry, MSDS/SDS, CPR/First Aid, and Bloodborne Pathogen certifications.

Ability to meet all department hiring requirements, including passage of a drug test .

Working knowledge of and ability to make practical application of Department safety policies and procedures and basic janitorial and sanitation requirements for assigned areas of responsibility.

Knowledge of safety precautions and practices applicable to working with a variety of cleaning chemicals and pesticides, with ability to read and understand equipment manuals and label directions for correct mixing and use of cleaning supplies and/or pesticides.

Ability to operate a variety of equipment in performance of duties, including but not limited to commercial custodial equipment, power washer, floor cleaner/buffer, auto scrubber, burnisher, carpet cleaner, vacuum cleaner, shop vac, and other equipment as needed.

Ability to physically perform the essential duties of the position, including sitting, standing, or walking for long periods, walking on uneven terrain, bending, reaching, pushing/pulling objects, handling/grasping objects, lifting/carrying objects weighing less than 50 pounds, crouching/kneeling, and climbing ladders. Strain is not prolonged, and effort is exerted for short to moderate periods of time.

Ability to work alone with minimum supervision and with others in a team environment.

Ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing with co-workers, other County departments, and the public, including being sensitive to professional ethics, gender, cultural diversities and disabilities.

Ability to provide public access to or maintain department information and records according to state requirements.

Ability to read/interpret detailed specifications such as data sheets.

Ability to count/make simple arithmetic additions/subtractions.

Ability to understand, memorize, retain, and carry out written or oral instructions.

Shall comply with all employer and department policies and work rules, including, but not limited to, attendance, safety, drug-free workplace, and personal conduct.

Possession of a valid driver’s license and demonstrated safe driving record.

**II. RESPONSIBILITY : **

Incumbent performs duties according to a flexible customary routine, with assignments and objectives set jointly with supervisor. Incumbent follows standard procedures or policy and must have supervisor’s permission to deviate from operating procedures. Work errors are primarily detected or prevented through standard safety procedures or notification from other County personnel or the public.

Incumbent reports directly to the Maintenance Director and/or Assistant Director.

**III. PHYSICAL EFFORT : **

Incumbent's duties involve sitting, standing, or walking for long periods, walking on uneven terrain, bending, reaching, pushing/pulling objects, handling/grasping objects, lifting/carrying objects weighing less than 50 pounds, crouching/kneeling, and climbing ladders. Strain is not prolonged, and effort is exerted for short to moderate periods of time

**IV. WORKING CONDITIONS : **

Incumbent performs duties in both indoor and outdoor settings, involving exposure to cleaning chemicals, fumes, dust, dirt, heights normally associated with maintenance duties, excessive noise, varying weather conditions, extreme temperatures, and slippery surfaces. Safety precautions must be followed at all times to avoid injury to self and others, including wearing protective clothing and equipment.
