We’re hiring a Respiratory Therapist (RRT) for the Respiratory Care Services department for a Full-Time, Day shift at the University of Chicago Medicine with the Pediatrics Team at our main campus in Hyde Park, Chicago, IL. Support pediatric patient populations. Student opportunities available for individuals currently enrolled in a Respiratory Therapy program. Job Summary In this role, the RRT administers respiratory care treatments, procedures, and protocols under direct supervision of department leadership and physician for the pediatric department. Performs patient assessment to determine cardiopulmonary status, implements appropriate patient care protocols, and maintains/improves cardiopulmonary hemodynamic status. Initiates and maintains emergent and non-emergent ventilation per department policies and protocols. Essential Job Functions Administers supplemental oxygen/medical gas therapy as prescribed by direct physician order or established departmental protocols, documenting accurately into the EPIC electronic medical record. Administers intermittent (small volume nebulizer, MDI, etc.) or continuous medication delivery therapy (bronchodilators, steroid therapy, mucolytics, etc.) as prescribed, documenting appropriately into EPIC. Administers bronchopulmonary hygiene, suctioning, and airway care procedures; implements airway clearance techniques (chest physiotherapy, coughing/deep breathing, therapy vest, Flutter valve, ExPap, Acapella, incentive spirometry) per physician order or departmental protocols, documenting appropriately. Initiates and maintains non‑invasive ventilation (BIPAP, CPAP, high‑flow cannula) on emergent and non‑emergent basis; assesses patient status and equipment, adjusts for comfort and therapy effectiveness, documenting into EPIC. Initiates, maintains, and checks status of mechanical ventilation; performs thorough assessment and implements weaning plans per physician order or departmental protocols, documenting accurately and timely. Provides ventilator management (NIV and mechanical), monitoring/hemodynamic reporting of patient parameters, documenting accurately and timely in EPIC. Performs arterial blood gas analysis; troubleshoots ABG analyzers, performs QC and calibration, reports results accurately and timely. Provides patient transport within the facility on oxygen delivery systems, mechanical ventilators, etc. Required Qualifications Graduate of an approved and accredited Respiratory Care Program (≥ 2 years duration); diploma or certificate and associate’s degree from accredited body. Effective communication and documentation skills, verbal and written. Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) by the National Board for Respiratory Care. Licensed in the State of Illinois as a Respiratory Care Practitioner. Basic Life Support (Healthcare provider) certification (American Heart Association). Neonatal Resuscitation Program, PALS, or ACLS certification preferred, depending on patient care area. Job Type & Shift Full Time (0.9 FTE). Day Shift 6:30am‑7:00pm. Clinical Unit Respiratory Care Services (Adult). COVID‑19 and Flu Vaccination Must comply with UCMC’s COVID‑19 vaccination requirement and Flu vaccination requirement.
