Pre-Admission Screening Role

The purpose of the Pre-Admission Screening role is to complete the pre-anesthesiology work for surgical patients at Findlay Surgery Center. Conducts assessment interviews and provides patient education, reviews pre-op tests/procedures, provides on-going communication and follow up with anesthesiology and other appropriate departments to ensure patient readiness for surgery, files patient information, and assists in the registration area with direct patient care as directed.

Job Duties/Responsibilities

1. Provides customer education on all tests/procedures.
2. Conducts thorough and accurate pre-anesthesia interviews.
3. Validates patients' demographic data, including completing any insurance/second opinion processes.
4. Assures completeness of pre-operative data.
5. Provides pertinent peri-operative education to patient/family.
6. Notifies appropriate disciplines/departments of preparatory interventions and treatments
7. Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patient served in the department.
8. Actively participates in the planning for and prioritizing of education needs in the department.
9. Completes annual competency program, including all documentation requirements.
10. Provides various training for projects assigned.
11. Promotes a positive image of the department and organization. Interacts effectively with co-workers and director. Keeps director informed.
12. Actively participates in seeking learning opportunities and readily shares knowledge with the department associates.

Required Qualifications

• Current state licensure as a Registered Nurse (RN)
• BLS & ACLS (within 90 days)
• Minimum of two (2) years clinical experience required.
• Ability to work at the computer for long periods. Skilled in key board skills. Ability to use the telephone to respond to customers, and the ability to use the computer and telephone simultaneously.
• Positive service-oriented interpersonal and communication skills required.
• Ability to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patient served on his/her assigned unit/department. The individual must demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span and possess the ability to assess data reflective of the patient status. Must be able to interpret the appropriate information needed to identify each patient's requirements relative to their age-specific needs and to provide the care needed as described in the area's policies and procedures.

Preferred Qualifications

• Knowledge of CPT Coding, ICD 9 Codes, and Medicare Reimbursement Issues preferred.

Physical Demands

• General: This position requires a full range of body motion with intermittent activities in walking; sitting, including sitting for up to 4 hours at a time; lifting, up to 50 lbs; bending; squatting; climbing; kneeling; twisting; and standing. Frequently stoops or crouches, pushes / pulls file storage cabinet or cart drawers to retrieve and return customer / patient materials and frequently changes body positions from sit-stand or stand-sit during the interview process and general office activities. Occasionally provides steadying or light assistance to ambulatory patients for standing walking within the area or in hallways and occasionally lifts and adjusts patients seated in a wheelchair with or without assistance.
• Hearing: Constantly able to hear human and technical sounds with interacting with customers, other professionals and the environment. Needs to be able to discern blood pressure sounds.
• Vision: Frequently reads literature, reports and other written materials written from other professionals. Constantly uses aspects of far and near vision, depth perception, as well as field of vision and sharp focus during the scheduling and interview processes. Frequently uses color vision to distinguish labels, assess patients and read data.
• Verbal Expression: Constantly needs to be able to speak clearly while interacting with patients and customers. Presents information to other professionals in formal and informal meetings, presentations, and in telephone consultations.
• Fine Motor Coordination: Must have full use of hand motions and fine finger dexterity in each finger. Must have good eye-hand coordination. Must be able to use the computer keyboard and mouse constantly.
• Environmental Factors: The nurse interview role involves occasional risk of infection (MRSA, Hepatitis, other blood borne pathogens) which require the use of safety precautions such as surgical masks, gowns, gloves, and special hand washing procedures. Materials and treatment surfaces may also require special handling.

This position is classified "at risk" for possible occupational exposure to blood borne pathogens (HBV, HIV, etc.)
