Public Works Technician / Laborer

Job Summary:
Performs a variety of public works duties involving construction, maintenance, repair, and operation of municipal infrastructure, equipment, and facilities. Assists with roadway maintenance, drainage systems, equipment repairs, and other public works projects to ensure the safety and functionality of city services.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

• Perform construction, repair, and maintenance of roads, streets, sidewalks, bridges, and drainage systems.
• Operate and maintain equipment such as tractors, backhoes, skid steers, dump trucks, mowers, and hand tools.
• Assist with diagnosing and repairing mechanical issues on city vehicles, equipment, and machinery.
• Conduct routine inspections and preventative maintenance on public works equipment.
• Repair potholes, install culverts, clear ditches, and maintain stormwater infrastructure.
• Load, unload, and transport construction materials and equipment to job sites.
• Perform grounds maintenance, including mowing, trimming, and debris removal.
• Respond to emergency situations such as severe weather events, flooding, and roadway hazards.
• Follow safety procedures and maintain a safe work environment.
• Complete work orders, maintenance logs, and other required documentation.
• Perform other duties as assigned by supervisors.

Qualifications:

• High school diploma or GED preferred.
• Experience in construction, public works, mechanical repair, heavy equipment operation, or a related field preferred.
• Knowledge of hand and power tools, equipment maintenance, and construction practices.
• Ability to perform strenuous physical labor in various weather conditions.
• Valid driver's license required; CDL preferred or ability to obtain.
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

Physical Requirements:

• Frequently lift and carry up to 50 pounds or more.
• Stand, walk, bend, climb, and work outdoors for extended periods.
• Ability to work in extreme heat, cold, rain, and other environmental conditions.
