AVP - General Liability Claims Manager

Role Description

The AVP – GL Claims Manager, reporting directly to SVP – Claims, is a full-time remote role responsible for managing and overseeing General Liability claims activities across assigned programs. Day-to-day responsibilities include:

  • Supervising claims handling workflows
  • Reviewing complex and high-severity claims
  • Providing guidance on coverage, liability, and damages evaluation
  • Ensuring consistent application of claims best practices
  • Collaborating closely with underwriting, legal, and distribution teams
  • Monitoring key metrics and conducting file audits
  • Recommending process improvements
  • Contributing to strategy development for emerging exposures and market trends

The position requires proactive leadership, clear communication, and effective decision-making in a remote environment.

Essential functions include:

  • Oversight, supervision, and management of all aspects of moderate to significant complexity claims from coverage through resolution
  • Adhering to company’s Litigation Management guidelines
  • Overseeing and managing all claim documentation by GL Claims Team
  • Oversight and management of timely reserve setting process
  • Managing, reviewing, and approving all expenses incurred on a claim
  • Overseeing and managing all risk transfer opportunities as warranted
  • Timely, professionally, and accurately reporting claims to reinsurers as required by guidelines
  • Anticipating and meeting all customer needs (both internal and external)
  • Presenting claims to senior leadership team and peer groups
  • Coordinating training, mentoring, and development of employees in the department
  • Occasional travel to mediations, trials, or industry events as needed
  • Performing other duties as assigned

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree with a concentration in business or equivalent work experience. JD applicants welcome but not required
  • 10-15 years of staff management and claims handling experience, with commercial E&S knowledge
  • Strong claims expertise, including claims management and claims handling experience in General Liability or related commercial lines
  • Experience working with underwriting teams to align claims strategies with program objectives and risk appetite
  • Proven leadership capabilities, including mentoring and supervising claims professionals and influencing cross-functional stakeholders
  • Experience with litigation management, negotiation, and alternative dispute resolution is beneficial
  • Ability to critically review a claim file for relevant information, accurately assess the information, and make necessary recommendations
  • Ability to make independent decisions with minimal or no supervision
  • Strong organizational and time management skills, with the ability to prioritize multiple complex files and projects in a remote setting
  • Extensive knowledge of the insurance industry and E&S markets
  • Ability to maintain a high level of tact and professionalism
  • Possess strong interpersonal skills
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Strong computer and office skills
