AVP - General Liability Claims Manager

Role Description
The AVP – GL Claims Manager, reporting directly to SVP – Claims, is a full-time remote role responsible for managing and overseeing General Liability claims activities across assigned programs. Day-to-day responsibilities include:
- Supervising claims handling workflows
- Reviewing complex and high-severity claims
- Providing guidance on coverage, liability, and damages evaluation
- Ensuring consistent application of claims best practices
- Collaborating closely with underwriting, legal, and distribution teams
- Monitoring key metrics and conducting file audits
- Recommending process improvements
- Contributing to strategy development for emerging exposures and market trends
The position requires proactive leadership, clear communication, and effective decision-making in a remote environment.
Essential functions include:
- Oversight, supervision, and management of all aspects of moderate to significant complexity claims from coverage through resolution
- Adhering to company’s Litigation Management guidelines
- Overseeing and managing all claim documentation by GL Claims Team
- Oversight and management of timely reserve setting process
- Managing, reviewing, and approving all expenses incurred on a claim
- Overseeing and managing all risk transfer opportunities as warranted
- Timely, professionally, and accurately reporting claims to reinsurers as required by guidelines
- Anticipating and meeting all customer needs (both internal and external)
- Presenting claims to senior leadership team and peer groups
- Coordinating training, mentoring, and development of employees in the department
- Occasional travel to mediations, trials, or industry events as needed
- Performing other duties as assigned
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree with a concentration in business or equivalent work experience. JD applicants welcome but not required
- 10-15 years of staff management and claims handling experience, with commercial E&S knowledge
- Strong claims expertise, including claims management and claims handling experience in General Liability or related commercial lines
- Experience working with underwriting teams to align claims strategies with program objectives and risk appetite
- Proven leadership capabilities, including mentoring and supervising claims professionals and influencing cross-functional stakeholders
- Experience with litigation management, negotiation, and alternative dispute resolution is beneficial
- Ability to critically review a claim file for relevant information, accurately assess the information, and make necessary recommendations
- Ability to make independent decisions with minimal or no supervision
- Strong organizational and time management skills, with the ability to prioritize multiple complex files and projects in a remote setting
- Extensive knowledge of the insurance industry and E&S markets
- Ability to maintain a high level of tact and professionalism
- Possess strong interpersonal skills
- Strong verbal and written communication skills
- Strong computer and office skills
