Over the Road Chassis Mechanic - 1st Shift Job Category: Maintenance and Repair Requisition Number: OVERT001733 Posted : May 21, 2026 Full-Time On-site Rate : $28 USD per hour Locations Showing 1 location Bedford Park, IL 60638, USA Job Summary The Chassis Mechanic will perform mechanical repairs and inspections mostly in an over the road environment. The employee will perform all types of chassis repairs including brake jobs, welding, cutting with a torch and repairing and replacing parts on the chassis using standard repair tools. Some minor container repairs, patches, door latches and hinges type of work. Repairs will be conducted based on estimates written by an M&R Supervisor and based off of roadability issues. Essential Job Functions Perform FMCSA chassis inspections Perform container chassis repairs of all types Change tires as necessary Maintain Parts Inventory Strictly adhere to all safety rules and regulations Communicate with management on space requirements, backlog of work, inventory issues, etc. Work and repair chassis according to TRAC Chassis Pool Repair Guidelines Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential duties Required Qualifications At least 2 years of experience in chassis mechanics, usage and customary repair methods Some experience with minor container repairs At least one year of experience in MIG and/or ARC welding Knowledge of AAR, IICL and DOT rules and criteria Ability to work independently without direct supervision Able to pass pre-employment background check and drug screening Proficiency with computer systems (Office and IDCS systems for rail) Ability to read and write legibly Ability to review a written plan and execute according to the stated standards Ability to work within a process-oriented, team atmosphere Must meet minimum FMCSA requirements Ability to meet deadlines, prioritize workloads and handle multiple tasks Work Environment: Outdoors with potential for extreme heat or cold condition Physical Requirements Frequently required to lift objects up to 75 lbs. Frequently required to move about both exterior and interior facilities Frequently required to communicate, understand and exchange information Frequently required to use tools and devices Ability to visually observe details at close range Frequently required to work in outdoor weather conditions Ability to use required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) Routine exposure to loud noises Proper handling, storage, transportation, and disposal of hazardous materials in accordance with local, state, and federal regulations Must have valid driver's license with no serious driving infractions (Annual motor vehicle report will be pulled annually).
