Surgical Technologist

SUMMARY Under the close supervision of a professional nurse and/or physician, perform a variety of duties in the operating room to assist the surgical team, such as scrubbing on all types of surgical procedures, lifting and positioning patients, cleaning instruments, restocking supplies, etc. Brown University Health employees are expected to successfully role model the organization’s values of Compassion, Accountability, Respect, and Excellence as these values guide our everyday actions with patients, customers and one another. Instill Trust and Value Differences Patient and Community Focus and Collaborate RESPONSIBILITIES Assist in preparing operating rooms for surgical procedures, ensuring all necessary instruments, equipment and supplies are available and properly stored. Assist nursing personnel and orderlies in lifting and positioning patients for surgical procedures. Scrub on all types of surgical procedures and pass instruments, sutures and sponges; assist in holding retractor and suctioning patients and anticipate needs of the physician. Responsible for maintaining strict aseptic techniques in the operating room area, reporting and correcting any “breaks” in such techniques. Clean surgical instruments and equipment after surgical procedures using operating sterilization equipment (e.g., autoclaves and ultrasonic) and wrapping and storing such equipment and instruments after they are cleaned. Remove soiled linen and supplies from the operating room after surgical procedures and assist in the general cleaning of the area. Obtain clean linen and supplies and set up room for next procedure. Obtain special equipment and supplies from the appropriate storage areas. Remove unused supplies from the surgery cart and store them in the appropriate area for use. Stock surgical supplies in the operating rooms and storage areas and perform other duties as assigned. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS Basic knowledge and experience: Knowledge of various surgical procedures to assist and anticipate physician needs. Knowledge of various surgical equipment and aseptic techniques; ability to operate sterilization equipment. Demonstrated knowledge and skills necessary to provide care to patients throughout the life span, with consideration of aging processes, human development stages and cultural patterns in each step of the care process. Education and certification: High School Diploma or GED is required. Completion of at least one of the following options is required: Graduate of an accredited surgical technologist program. Graduate of a surgical technologist associate degree program. Current certification as a CST. Current NCCT‑TC (tech in surgery) certification (for applicants with past military experience only; military experience as a surgical technologist will be strongly considered). 3 years of experience within the past 5 years as a surgical technologist. Successful completion of a Brown University Health on‑job surgical technologist training program. Successful completion of the Community College of Rhode Island’s certificate surgical technologist program. Current BLS Certification required upon hire. WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS Required to work in a sterile environment and regularly exposed to cuts and punctures from surgical instruments and equipment, burns from autoclaves, anesthesia gases, as well as odors and communicable diseases from patients. Physical ability to assist in lifting and positioning of patients and to stand for extended periods of time during surgical procedures. SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES None.
