Caring Health Center in Springfield, Massachusetts, is seeking an Adult Primary Care Medical Director and Assistant Chief Medical Officer.

This is an opportunity to become a physician leader or continue growing as one while making a significant impact in a mission-driven community health organization. You will work directly with and be mentored by the Chief Medical Officer, who has a long record of developing physicians into senior leaders.

We welcome physicians who are board certified in Internal Medicine, Family Medicine, Geriatric Medicine, or an appropriate ambulatory Internal Medicine subspecialty such as Endocrinology, Rheumatology, or Infectious Disease.

In this role, you will mentor and develop physicians and advanced practice providers, play a key leadership role in quality, population health, and value-based care across a large accountable care organization population, support the continued growth of the health center, and play a central role as we plan to develop future residency training programs.

The role provides hands-on development in clinical operations, finance, leadership, and managing clinical teams while allowing you to continue meaningful outpatient clinical practice.

This is a single, integrated leadership position reporting directly to the Chief Medical Officer. As Adult Primary Care Medical Director, you will provide physician leadership and clinical oversight for adult primary care. As Assistant Chief Medical Officer, you will partner with the CMO on broader organizational priorities, including quality, population health, clinical operations, physician development, strategic growth, and medical education. The scope of Assistant CMO responsibilities will expand over time based on experience, interests, and organizational needs.

Minimum Requirements

• Unrestricted Massachusetts medical license or the ability to obtain one prior to the start date.

• Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) degree.

• Completion of an accredited residency in Internal Medicine, Internal Medicine-Pediatrics, or Family Medicine.

• Board certification in Internal Medicine, Family Medicine, Geriatric Medicine, or an appropriate ambulatory Internal Medicine subspecialty such as Endocrinology, Rheumatology, or Infectious Disease.

• Current DEA and Massachusetts Controlled Substances registrations, or the ability to obtain them prior to the start date.

• Experience providing high-quality, patient-centered care to a diverse and multilingual patient population, or a strong commitment to doing so.

• Ability to obtain and maintain privileges at local partner hospital systems for care coordination purposes. This is an outpatient role with no inpatient clinical responsibilities.

• Ability to be credentialed with Medicare, MassHealth, and major commercial insurers.

• Experience or strong interest in clinical leadership, quality improvement, clinician development, and team-based primary care.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience in an FQHC, community health center, or other setting serving diverse or underserved populations is desirable.

• Experience or interest in quality improvement, population health, accountable care organizations, value-based care, or integrated care models.

• Experience leading, supervising, coaching, or mentoring physicians, advanced practice providers, or multidisciplinary clinical teams is welcomed but not required.

• Demonstrated leadership potential, including the ability to build relationships, influence others, solve problems, improve care, and work effectively across clinical and operational teams.

• A desire to learn and develop skills in physician leadership, clinical operations, finance, quality, and organizational management. Candidates who have not previously held a formal leadership position are encouraged to apply.

• An advanced degree such as an MPH, MBA, MHA, or other relevant education or experience is desirable but not required.

Principal Responsibilities and Duties

Clinical Care

• Provide exemplary outpatient clinical care within training and scope of practice and participate in the provider on-call schedule as required.

• Deliver evidence-based, patient-centered care to a diverse and multicultural patient population.

• Model high standards for clinical quality, documentation, communication, professionalism, and continuity of care.

• Promote effective use of Epic and team-based approaches that improve access, outcomes, and the patient experience.

Clinical Leadership and Clinician Development

• Provide leadership, coaching, mentorship, and support to physicians and advanced practice providers across adult primary care.

• Partner with the CMO on clinical standards, policies, workflows, and organizational priorities.

• Participate in clinician recruitment, onboarding, professional development, evaluation, and performance improvement.

• Lead or co-lead provider meetings, case reviews, and clinical improvement initiatives.

• Help build a culture of high performance, teamwork, professional growth, and shared accountability.

Quality, Population Health, and Clinical Operations

• Partner with the CMO, quality team, nursing, practice management, and other leaders to advance quality, patient safety, population health, and value-based care.

• Help design and implement improvement initiatives using data to identify opportunities and measure progress.

• Support efforts to improve access, chronic disease outcomes, care coordination, clinical workflows, documentation, productivity, and patient experience.

• Participate in the review of clinical events, quality concerns, and performance trends and help develop sustainable improvements.

• Support the continued development and integration of behavioral health, care management, chronic disease programs, specialty services, and other clinical resources.

Strategy, Education, and Organizational Growth

• Partner with the CMO on clinical strategy, operational initiatives, care delivery models, and organizational growth.

• Play a leadership role in planning future residency training programs and other clinical education initiatives.

• Provide teaching, mentorship, and professional development for physicians, advanced practice providers, students, residents, and other trainees.

• Help build relationships with medical schools, residency programs, universities, community partners, and professional organizations.

• Participate in provider staffing, clinical program development, Epic optimization, and other initiatives that improve clinical effectiveness and organizational performance.

• Develop increasing responsibility in clinical operations, finance, physician management, and organizational leadership as part of the Assistant Chief Medical Officer role.

Communication and Leadership Expectations

• Demonstrate professionalism, respect, empathy, cultural humility, and sound judgment in interactions with patients, clinicians, staff, and organizational leaders.

• Communicate clearly and collaboratively across clinical, operational, and administrative teams.

• Identify clinical and operational challenges and work collaboratively to develop practical, sustainable solutions.

• Maintain all required licensure, certifications, credentials, and clinical privileges necessary for the role.

Working conditions:

• This position may require prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and writing on a computer.
• On-call coverage is generally required; frequency depends upon need.
• Potential exposure to patient blood and body fluids.
• Requirements include lifting and carrying objects up to 25 lbs. on average.

Salary Range- $240,000 to $290,000
