Mentor A Promise (MAP) is a NYC-based nonprofit serving children and youth ages 5–18 experiencing housing instability through mentorship, literacy, social-emotional learning, and creative expression. At MAP, accessibility is not an afterthought—it is foundational to how we design programs, materials, and environments so that every child and young person can fully access support and opportunity.

MAP’s visual identity, educational resources, books, media, and digital platforms are built with accessibility and dignity at the center.

Role Overview

The Digital Content Accessibility Coordinator supports MAP’s commitment to disability justice by assessing and strengthening the accessibility of digital content across departments. This role works closely with the Physical Accessibility Coordinator and Sensory Accessibility Coordinator as part of a collaborative, cross-functional Disability Justice & Accessibility Team.

The Coordinator conducts regular audits of digital content, prepares clear accessibility summaries, and supports departments in improving their practices. All accessibility roles work together to produce holistic, department-level accessibility reports that integrate digital, physical, and sensory considerations.

Key Responsibilities

• Assess the accessibility of MAP’s digital materials across departments, including:
  • Social media content
  • Email communications
  • Digital documents and resources
• Review accessibility elements such as:
  • Screen reader compatibility
  • Color contrast
  • Use of alt text and image descriptions
  • Font size and font usage
  • Headings, numbered and bulleted lists, and overall readability
• Prepare concise digital accessibility summaries for each department and submit them to the team lead
• Support the team lead in identifying strengths and areas for improvement in departmental digital practices
• Teach a designated member of each department how to create more accessible digital content (e.g., alt text usage, accessible tools and platforms)
• Serve as a digital accessibility resource for MAP volunteers seeking guidance
• Uphold Universal Design principles and accessibility standards to the best of ability
• Participate in:
  • Biweekly department accessibility audits
  • Weekly Disability Justice & Accessibility Team check-ins

Qualifications

• Strong commitment to accessibility and disability justice
• Familiarity with digital platforms and accessibility considerations
• Ability to synthesize accessibility guidance in a clear, approachable way
• Reliability and comfort working in a collaborative nonprofit environment
• Alignment with MAP’s mission and dignity-centered values

Preferred Skills

• Experience advocating for disabled individuals and/or lived experience as a disabled person
• Familiarity with:
  • WCAG standards
  • Screen readers (e.g., JAWS)
  • Alt text and image description best practices
  • Color contrast checking tools
• Knowledge of Universal Design principles
• Experience working with writers, designers, or creative teams

Commitment

• Volunteer role
• Approximately 5–10 hours per week
• Minimum 6-month commitment preferred
• Fully remote with optional NYC-based collaboration
