Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP)

Duties

The incumbent practices in Mental Health services as a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP) to provide a full range of services in a variety of settings, emphasizing quality, timeliness, and the advancement of the Veterans Affairs (VA) mission. The PMHNP provides advanced clinical practice, consultation, and management. These skills enable the Advance Practice Nurse (APN) to anticipate and implement preventive health measures with a strong emphasis on patient/significant other/family education as well as illness management of mental health care/specialty care. The PMHNP practices to the full extent of their education, training, and certification. Core functions are outlined in the clinical privileges that correspond with this position. The PMHNP has prescriptive authority, if required, as indicated by their position. All Nurse Practitioners assigned to Mental Health Service will meet basic requirements and hold a degree of Master's level or higher from a university. Each Nurse Practitioner will establish and maintain professional relationships within Mental Health Service and with other services within the medical center. Also:

• Uses advanced clinical judgment to independently provide evidence-based treatment to Veterans with acute or chronic mental illness including use of psychotropic medications, psychotherapy, and other modalities.
• Provides patient and family education on medical/mental health conditions, preventive measures, and prescribed treatments.
• Demonstrates leadership and engages in collaboration with other mental health and specialty care professionals while involving Veterans and their families (as appropriate), in treatment plan development.
• Assesses and adjusts the plan of care as needed to achieve optimal patient outcomes
• Counsels and treats patients with substance use disorders.
• Orders and interprets diagnostic studies
• Initiates referrals/consults to specialty services

Preferred Experience:

• Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP) certification 2+ years of practice as psychiatric NP

Pay:

Competitive salary, regular salary increases, potential for performance awards
