Nursing Assistant The Veterans Health Administration is seeking Nursing Assistants for Nursing Operations at the Sheridan VA Health Care System in Sheridan, WY. Positions may support the Mental Health Residential Rehabilitation Treatment Program, APU, Medical Unit, Community Living Center, and Float Pool. Observe and report changes in patient behavior, attitude, appearance, color, vital signs, wound or skin condition, and response to treatment. Assist with diagnostic and assessment examinations by taking, monitoring, recording, and reporting vital signs, height, weight, symptoms, and patient concerns. Provide care to patients experiencing severe depression, agitation, behavioral issues, complex medical conditions, or other challenging care needs. Work around medical equipment and use medical supplies safely and appropriately. Recognize emergency situations and intervene appropriately while awaiting assistance. Assist patients with activities of daily living as needed. Perform patient care and comfort measures related to hygiene, physical comfort, nutrition, hydration, skin care, rehabilitation, and safety. Identify and report subtle changes in patient behavior, condition, neurological status, vital signs, safety risks, and other care-related parameters. Explain procedures and health care needs to patients and family members. Provide health information based on the patient's condition, including limited mobility, body mechanics, and adherence to prescribed medical or mental health regimens. Complete quarterly Basic Life Support training before the first day of each new quarter. Enter patient information into the electronic health record using appropriate formats, medical terminology, and templates. Maintain complete, confidential, and professional patient documentation. Establish and maintain positive working relationships with employees, volunteers, patients, stakeholders, and community agencies. Attend interdisciplinary treatment team meetings, staff meetings, and other appropriate meetings or committees. Perform additional duties as needed. Basic Qualifications: Must be a U.S. Citizen. Non-citizens may only be appointed when qualified citizens cannot be recruited in accordance with VA policy. Must be proficient in written and spoken English. Must have six months of general experience demonstrating the ability to acquire the knowledge and skills to perform Nursing Assistant work; or Must have one year of education above high school with courses related to the Nursing Assistant occupation; or Must have completed an intensive, specialized, occupation-related training course or program of less than one year as a Nursing Assistant. Must be subject to a background/security investigation. Must pass pre-employment drug testing and remain subject to testing requirements for this testing designated position. GS-3 Qualification Requirements: Must meet the basic qualification requirements. No additional experience or education beyond the basic requirements is required. GS-3 is the entry level and is closely supervised. GS-4 Qualification Requirements: Must have one year of specialized Nursing Assistant experience or experience in another medical field, such as licensed practical nurse, health technician, or hospital corpsman, performing technical and nursing skills; or Must have successfully completed two years above high school in an accredited institution with courses related to nursing care, health care, or an appropriate related field. Must be able to provide a range of patient or resident care and contribute to the nurse care plan and recovery of patients or residents. Must be able to observe physical or emotional status and refer deviations or problems to a supervisor in a timely manner. Must be able to properly use equipment, materials, and supplies in simple diagnostic and treatment procedures. Must be able to communicate effectively with patients, residents, families, and other health professionals. GS-5 Qualification Requirements: Must have one year of progressively responsible experience equivalent to the GS-4 level that is directly related to the assignment; or Must have successfully completed a four-year course of study above high school leading to a bachelor's degree that included 24 semester hours of courses related to health care, or possess a bachelor's degree. Must be able to assist in the full range of nursing care for patients or residents with physical and/or behavioral problems under the direction of a Registered Nurse, Licensed Vocational Nurse, or Licensed Practical Nurse. Must be able to communicate orally with patients, residents, families, interdisciplinary team members, and other personnel. Must be able to serve as a preceptor to new Nursing Assistants by helping coordinate orientation and assessing practical experience in a clinical setting. Must be able to recognize and react to emergent patient or resident care situations and intervene while awaiting assistance. GS-5 is the full performance level for this vacancy. Preferred Experience: 12 months of Nursing Assistant experience preferred. Education: A transcript must be submitted if using education to qualify. Education must be from an institution recognized by the U.S. Department of Education. Foreign education must be supported by a certificate of foreign equivalency if used to meet qualification requirements.
