Assistant Controller

Overview

We are seeking an Assistant Controller to join our client's national organization and support the continued growth of our finance function. This role is ideal for an individual coming directly from public accounting (Audit) who is ready to take the next step into industry and contribute to a sophisticated corporate accounting environment. The Assistant Controller will play a critical role in managing accounting operations, ensuring accurate financial reporting, and supporting process improvements across the organization.

Key Responsibilities

• Financial Reporting & Month-End Close
• Lead and support components of the monthly, quarterly, and annual close processes.
• Prepare and review journal entries, account reconciliations, and variance analyses.
• Assist in drafting financial statements in accordance with U.S. GAAP.
• Internal Controls & Compliance
• Support the maintenance and enhancement of internal controls over financial reporting.
• Partner with external auditors and provide audit support, schedules, and documentation.
• Accounting Operations
• Oversee day‑to‑day accounting activities, including AP, AR, fixed assets, and general ledger functions (depending on company structure).
• Help streamline accounting processes and implement best practices learned from public audit.
• Technical Accounting
• Research and interpret accounting guidance; support adoption of new standards.
• Assist with complex accounting areas such as revenue recognition, leases, consolidations, and equity.
• Cross-Functional Collaboration
• Partner with FP&A, operations, and other business units to support financial accuracy and visibility.
• Provide insights that help leadership understand financial performance and business drivers.
• Leadership & Development
• Mentor junior accounting staff and support team development.
• Act as second-in-command to the Controller, stepping into leadership responsibilities as needed.

Qualifications

• 2–5 years of public accounting audit experience , preferably with a national or Big 4 firm.
• Strong understanding of U.S. GAAP , internal controls, and financial reporting.
• CPA or CPA-eligible strongly preferred.
• Experience auditing multi-entity, multi-state, or national organizations is a plus.
• Excellent analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
• Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
• Strong communication skills with the ability to present financial data to non-finance stakeholders.
• Advanced proficiency in Excel; experience with ERP systems is a plus (e.g., NetSuite, SAP, Oracle).
