Media Clerk
Under occasional supervision, assists the Media Specialist with non-professional library tasks required to manage the library and its collections, circulate materials, and provide reference, research and technical assistance for students and teachers. Reports to the Media Specialist or other supervisor as assigned.
Maintains and updates computerized inventory of library holdings and patron information; maintains other collection records as directed.
Schedules and video-records instructional programs as requested by teachers; sets up audio-visual equipment in classrooms as needed for viewing.
Prepares recorded videotapes, books, periodicals and other materials for circulation.
Assists students and teachers in selecting appropriate information sources and in locating needed information for research projects.
Assists students (individually and in small or large groups) in the use of reference materials and in the development of research skills; assists students in using electronic resources and applications software.
Prepares and distributes overdue notices; receives and receipts payments.
Performs general library duties, including receiving and processing new materials, cataloging, checking materials in and out, shelving materials and straightening shelves, weeding materials, mending books, etc.
Assists in conducting annual inventory of library materials.
Assists in instructing and supervising the work of student assistants and volunteers; supervises students assigned to media center for completion of assignments and as assigned.
Assists in maintaining media center equipment and software.
Assists in coordinating special programs, services and events as required.
Receives, reviews, prepares and/or processes packing lists, various forms, materials lists, circulation reports, schedules, requisitions, notices, memos, correspondence, etc.
Refers to policy and procedure manual, computer manuals, periodicals, catalogs, etc.
Interacts and communicates with immediate supervisor, teachers, students, parents, District staff, etc.
Operates various types of machinery and equipment including computers, printers, scanner, audio-visual equipment, typewriter, telephone, adding machine, copier, fax machine, laminator, microfiche reader, video camera, binding machine, tape recorder, book carts, etc.
Uses clerical, copier, computer and library supplies.
Performs general office duties as necessary, including answering the telephone, typing documents, copying and filing documents, binding documents, processing mail, entering data into the computer, etc.
Arranges exhibits and bulletin board displays.
Maintains a neat and orderly media center and work area.
Performs related duties as required.
Requires a high school diploma supplemented by one to two years of library and/or clerical experience, or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.
Must be physically able to operate a variety of automated office machines and equipment including a computer, adding machine, audio-visual equipment, copier, etc. Tasks involve the ability to exert very moderate physical effort in light work, typically involving some combination of stooping, kneeling, and the lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling of objects and materials of moderate weight (12-20 pounds). Tasks may involve extended periods of time at a keyboard or workstation.
Requires the ability to compare and/or judge the readily observable functional, structural or compositional characteristics (whether similar to or divergent from obvious standards) of data, people or things.
Requires the ability of speaking and/or signaling people to convey or exchange information. Includes giving assignments and/or directions to students and receiving assignments and/or direction from supervisor.
Requires ability to read a variety of policy and procedure manuals, reference materials, technical manuals, etc. Requires the ability to prepare reports, records, notices, etc., with proper format, punctuation, spelling and grammar, using all parts of speech. Requires the ability to speak with and before others with poise, voice control and confidence.
Requires the ability to apply rational systems to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists; to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagrammatic, or schedule form.
Requires the ability to learn and understand principles and techniques; to make routine independent judgments in absence of supervision; to acquire knowledge of topics related to primary occupation. Must have the ability to comprehend and interpret received information.
Requires the ability to record and deliver information, to explain procedures, to follow verbal and written instructions; to teach students and teachers. Must be able to communicate effectively and efficiently with persons of varying ages and cultural and educational backgrounds.
Requires the ability to add and subtract totals, to multiply and divide, to determine percentages and decimals and to determine time. Must be able to use practical applications of fractions, percentages, ratio and proportion.
Requires the ability to inspect items for proper length, width and shape, and visually read various information.
Requires the ability to coordinate hands and eyes using office machinery.
Requires the ability to handle a variety of items, keyboards, office equipment, control knobs, buttons, switches, catches, etc. Must have minimal levels of eye/hand/foot coordination.
Requires the ability to differentiate colors and shades of color; requires the visual acuity to determine depth perception, peripheral vision, inspection for small parts; preparing and analyzing written or computer data, etc.
Requires the ability to deal with people beyond giving and receiving instructions. Must be adaptable to performing under stress when confronted with emergency situations or tight deadlines.
Requires the ability to talk and hear: (talking: expressing or exchanging ideas by means of spoken words; hearing: perceiving nature of sounds by ear).
Has thorough knowledge of the methods, procedures and policies of the Kershaw County School District as they pertain to the performance of duties of the Media Clerk.
Has knowledge of the organization of related departments and agencies. Has knowledge of the laws, ordinances, standards and regulations pertaining to the specific duties and responsibilities of the position. Is able to take the initiative to complete the duties of the position without the need of direct supervision. Is able to plan, organize and prioritize daily assignments and work activities.
Is able to offer assistance to co-workers and employees of other departments as required. Has knowledge of and is able to use modern office practices and equipment, including computers.
Has knowledge of proper English usage, vocabulary, punctuation and spelling; has the mathematical ability to handle required calculations. Is able to type accurately at a rate sufficient for the successful performance of assigned duties. Has knowledge of how to maintain a variety of office equipment as necessary in the performance of daily activities. Is skilled in applying a responsible attention to detail as necessary in preparing reports and correspondence. Is able to read and interpret various materials pertaining to the responsibilities of the job. Has knowledge of how to perform duties in a courteous manner and with the utmost integrity in the best interest of the public. Has knowledge of how to maintain effective relationships with co-workers, personnel of other departments and members of the public through contact and cooperation. Has knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the trade. Is able to effectively perform assigned duties despite frequent interruptions and the stress of deadlines. Has knowledge of how to react calmly and quickly in emergency situations. Is able to learn and utilize new skills and information to improve job performance and efficiency.
