Job Title: Labor and Delivery Nurse Profession: RN Specialty: RN - Labor and Delivery Duration: 18 weeks Shift: Night Shift Hours per Shift: 12 hours (1900 - 0730) Experience: Two years experience in Labor and Delivery required License: Current RN license in state of practice required Certifications: Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certification required Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) certification required Intermediate Fetal Monitoring Course required Description: The Labor and Delivery Nurse is responsible for the planning and provision of nursing care to patients and their families during the antepartum, intrapartum, and postpartum periods. This includes emergency situations and circulating for C-Sections. The nurse supervises and delegates care responsibilities to ancillary personnel commensurate with their scope of practice. The position is represented by a nursing association. The Labor and Delivery Nurse performs physical and psychosocial assessments of patients, demonstrating knowledge and consideration of age and cultural differences. The nurse initiates a multidisciplinary, goal-oriented care plan for each patient in collaboration with members of the healthcare team and provides care based on that plan. Demonstrates appropriate clinical judgment in managing perinatal emergencies, including but not limited to crash C-sections, precipitous delivery, and shoulder dystocia. Assesses fetal and maternal well-being, amniotic fluid status, vaginal bleeding, and recognizes and manages abnormalities. Effectively manages pain control in the laboring patient and supports and implements alternative pain control when appropriate. Competence in assisting with epidural catheter placement and monitoring fetal and maternal status during the procedure is required. Educates patients and families in all stages of the perinatal and postpartum period using age-appropriate methods. Completes legible, accurate, and timely documentation of all nursing care provided, including evaluations of patient responses to medications, treatments, and procedures. Consistently performs necessary unit-specific safety and quality control checks. Performs other job-related duties as assigned.
