Certified Police Officer

Position Overview Under the general supervision of a Sergeant and in cooperation with the community, performs a variety of policing and law enforcement activities. Tasks are primarily service oriented and include patrol, investigative, and enforcement functions to generally provide for the safety of the public. Incumbents must act without close supervision, exercise independent judgement, and assume the duties of a Sergeant in their absence when authorized. Minimum Requirements Must be a current State of Florida Certified Police Officer United States Citizen Minimum 21 years of age High School Graduate or G.E.D. equivalency Pass Physical Agility Test (PAT) Pass Swim Test Pass Oral Board Examination Pass Polygraph Examination Pass Psychological Screening (Law) Pass an extensive background investigation Pass a Chief and/or Command Staff review Pass an extensive medical evaluation Pass drug detection by urinalysis test Meet current State training requirements as necessary Stable work history Valid driver's license and acceptable driving record Possess ability to exercise discretion Be of good moral character, have no felony convictions, and have not committed any incidents of violence No felony convictions or misdemeanors involving perjury or false statements Military discharge must be "Honorable" Certified Police Officers previously employed by the City of Hollywood who passed the hiring process may have certain requirements waived Testing Requirements Candidates must pass the Physical Agility Test (PAT) and the Swim Test. The PAT score is valid for six months; the Swim score is valid for life. Candidates must also submit training records and credentials to demonstrate attainment of Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) standards. Additional certifications or testing may be required to qualify for further evaluation by participating agencies. Evaluation and Disqualification Factors All applicants must successfully pass a comprehensive set of evaluations: personal history review, oral board, polygraph, psychological screening, background investigation, command staff review, medical exam, and drug screening. Failure to pass any of these criteria disqualifies the applicant. Automatic disqualifiers include: five or more traffic moving violations in the last five years; two or more driver‑license suspensions in the last five years; any DUI arrest or conviction in the last five years; tattoos on the neck or face; domestic violence convictions; failure to disclose required background information; recent use of illegal substances; recent failed background or psychological screening; non‑honorable military discharge. Veteran Preference The City values the service of veterans and their families and proactively recruits and hires veterans. Candidates must submit a copy of separation documents (DD‑214) and satisfy Florida statutory requirements to receive veteran preference. Employment Conditions and Policies The City requires all newly hired employees to sign an affidavit affirming non‑usage of tobacco products within the last year and continuing throughout employment. Employment of relatives is governed by a municipal ordinance; relatives may be hired only when they meet specific eligibility and rank criteria and the hiring authority demonstrates municipal benefit.
