Registered Respiratory Therapist, 36 Hours (Days/Nights)

Position Function The Respiratory Therapy Department has formally adopted the American Association For Respiratory Care Clinical Practice Guidelines (AARC CPG) for patient care. Respiratory Therapists function in a physician‑supervised environment following AARC CPG (where applicable) as well as established departmental standards and practices. Respiratory Therapists provide critical‑care service to all patient age groups. Job Relationships Reports to the Technical Manager of Respiratory Therapy (or his/her designee). Interacts with other health‑care professionals to plan, provide, monitor, and evaluate respiratory care services for outpatients. Authority Has the authority to provide all facets of critical‑care respiratory therapy based upon patient assessment and within hospital/department policies, procedures, and the American Association for Respiratory Care Clinical Practice Guidelines. In the event of an untoward response to therapy, the therapist will institute appropriate emergency procedures/protocols, notify the physician and nurse responsible for the patient, and remain in constant attendance at the patient’s bedside until relieved. Responsibilities – Essential Functions Provides superior customer service to internal and external clients, customers, and patients as referenced in the Service Excellence Standards. Reviews the medical record, including: Physicians’ orders for completeness and indications for therapy, and potential contraindications prior to administering therapies/medications in accordance with AARC CPG. Conducts a clinical patient assessment, including cardiac, pulmonary, and neurologic status. Follows detailed assessment criteria from individual AARC CPGs for specific therapies ordered. Assembles equipment per manufacturer specifications and departmental standards, confirms function beforehand, monitors during use, and applies corrective action if malfunction occurs. Administers ordered therapy while monitoring patient outcome, hazards, or complications during or immediately after treatment. Maintains, monitors, and adjusts mechanical ventilators appropriately to ensure proper function and therapeutic effectiveness. Performs routine oxygen, aerosol, emergent airway management, chest physiotherapy, postural drainage, and/or sputum induction in accordance with AARC CPG. Conducts regular assessments of patients and deliverable systems (e.g., ventilator systems) following AARC CPG and departmental standards. Documents patient assessments, therapies delivered, monitoring, responses, and complications in the medical record in accordance with AARC CPG. Provides emergency response for cardiopulmonary arrest, respiratory emergencies, hospital disasters, and other emergencies as needed, including basic life support maneuvers and maintaining AHA BLS certification annually. Acts as a member of the health‑care delivery team, assisting in the development and implementation of multidisciplinary patient care plans, evaluating ongoing care, and participating in pulmonary rehabilitation of difficult‑to‑wean patients. Provides routine care, cleaning, disinfecting, and maintenance of departmental equipment, documents malfunctions, and alerts supervisor. Assists with inventory management and notifies supervisor when stock levels require replenishment. Measures pulmonary function and related parameters (e.g., gas exchange, respiratory rate, tidal and minute ventilation, alveolar‑to‑arterial PO₂ gradient, shunt fraction, compliance, pulse rate, blood pressure, arterial blood gases, end‑tidal CO₂, pulse oximetry), calibrates, and maintains equipment per manufacturer recommendations and departmental standards. Assists, with appropriate training, in bronchoscopes, sleep studies, bronchial provocation, and exercise testing for evaluating hypoxemia or desaturation. Maintains departmental documentation, including patient charting, therapy records, quality assurance, patient charges, and assists in development and maintenance of quality assurance programs and audits. Responsibilities – Non‑Essential Functions Enhances professional growth and development through in‑service meetings, educational programs, current literature, workshops, and active participation in local and national respiratory therapy societies. Reporting Requirements Reports patient condition, therapies, therapeutic goals, and response during shift-to-shift handovers. Documents adverse reactions to pharmaceuticals or therapies. Notifies hospital variance report as required. Accountability Maintains confidentiality and security of all hospital, staff, and patient data (electronic or hard copy). Abides by all hospital/department policies and procedures. Accurately measures and calculates pulmonary parameters. Demonstrates comprehensive knowledge of critical‑care respiratory therapy and AARC CPG. Qualifications Minimum Experience : Consider applicants with less than one year of respiratory therapy experience. Minimum Skills/Abilities : Interpersonal and communication skills sufficient to explain respiratory therapy/pulmonary function test procedures to patients. Certification/Licensure : RRT License in respiratory therapy by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts; Certification in Basic Life Support by the AHA or Red Cross required; Advanced Life Support Certification preferred. Must obtain sufficient annual continuing education to maintain license. Compensation : $41.52 – $55.88 per hour. Pay range is influenced by education, experience, licensure, and certifications.
