Job Description: The Independently manage a portfolio of criticized, classified, special mention, substandard, doubtful, and non-accrual commercial loans. Develop and execute action plans designed to improve loan performance, mitigate risk, and maximize recovery potential. Maintain ongoing borrower contact and manage client relationships throughout workout and resolution processes. Monitor loan performance, payment activity, covenant compliance, collateral values, guarantors support, and financial condition. Conduct periodic portfolio reviews and recommend strategic actions to management. Job Description: The Special Assets Officer is responsible for the independent management and administration of the Bank's criticized, classified, and non-performing commercial loan portfolio. This individual will serve as the primary point of contact for non-pass rated borrowers and will work proactively to minimize credit losses, maximize recoveries, and ensure timely resolution of problem loans. The candidate must possess strong commercial credit skills, sound judgment, excellent communication, abilities, and substantial experience working directly with borrowers, attorneys, appraisers, and other external professionals. The position requires the ability to independently manage a portfolio of complex commercial credits while balancing risk mitigation and relationship management objectives. Portfolio Management Independently manage a portfolio of criticized, classified, special mention, substandard, doubtful, and non-accrual commercial loans. Develop and execute action plans designed to improve loan performance, mitigate risk, and maximize recovery potential. Maintain ongoing borrower contact and manage client relationships throughout workout and resolution processes. Monitor loan performance, payment activity, covenant compliance, collateral values, guarantors support, and financial condition. Conduct periodic portfolio reviews and recommend strategic actions to management. Borrower Interaction & Collections Serve as the primary point of contact for borrowers within the special asset portfolio. Collect past due payments and negotiate repayment strategies. Obtain and review borrower and guarantor financial information. Conduct meetings with borrowers, guarantors, attorneys, accountants, and other stakeholders. Document discussions, action items, and workout strategies in accordance with Bank policy. Credit Analysis & Risk Assessment Analyze and spread borrower and guarantor financial statements using Bank-approved spreading software. Perform detailed cash flow analysis, debt service coverage calculations, and global cash flow assessments. Recommend changes to internal risk ratings based on financial performance, collateral position, and overall credit quality. Evaluate collateral adequacy and guarantor support and recommend impairment for individual loans. Covenant Monitoring Track and monitor compliance with loan covenants. Review borrower-submitted financial statements, rent rolls, operating statements, tax returns, and other reporting requirements. Identify covenant violations and recommend corrective actions. Prepare covenant compliance analysis and exception reporting. Loan Modifications & Restructuring Structure, negotiating, and document loan modifications, forbearance agreements, extensions, and other workout arrangements. Coordinate with legal counsel in preparing and reviewing loan modification documentation. Negotiate terms that protect the Bank's interests while supporting viable borrower solutions. Present modification recommendations to appropriate loan committees. Appraisals & Collateral Management Order and manage collateral valuation activities including appraisals, environmental assessments, and property inspections. Review appraisal reports and assess collateral trends and valuation risks. Coordinate with third-party vendors and ensure compliance with regulatory appraisal requirements. Monitor collateral performance and market conditions impacting valuation. Regulatory & Reporting Responsibilities Prepare quarterly non-pass asset reports and related portfolio analysis. Prepare problem loan reports for executive management, credit committees, auditors, and regulators. Assist with regulatory examinations and internal audits. Maintain complete and accurate loan file documentation. Ensure all activities comply with Bank policies and applicable regulatory requirements. Impairment Analysis Perform quarterly impairment analyses on individually evaluated credits. Calculate specific reserves and document assumptions supporting estimated loss exposure. Collaborate with Finance, Credit Administration, and external auditors regarding reserve methodologies and reporting. Support the Bank's Allowance for Credit Losses (ACL) process as required. Qualifications and Education Requirements: Minimum 15 years of banking experience Minimum 5 years of direct Special Assets, Loan Workout, Problem Loan Management, Commercial Collections, or Credit Resolution experience. Experience independently administering a portfolio of criticized and classified loans. Bachelor’s degree in finance, accounting, business administration, economics, or related fields. Formal commercial credit training. Previous experience in a community bank or regional bank with significant commercial real estate concentration. Experience presenting credits to executive management, loan committees, and board-level committees. Competencies: Strong understanding of commercial real estate lending, Advanced commercial credit analysis Experience with financial statement spreading. Thorough understanding of regulatory classifications criticized assets, and non-performing loan management. Knowledge of impairment analysis, collateral valuation, and reserve practices. Strong negotiation, communication, and relationship management skills. Ability to manage multiple complex credits independently with minimal supervision.
