Requisition No: 878087 Agency: Department of Health Title: Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) – Santa Rosa Beach, FL Position Number: 64003914 Pay Plan: Career Service Salary: $45,000 annually ($1,730.77 biweekly) Posting Closing Date: 07/02/2026 Responsibilities This is a clinical services position at the Florida Department of Health in Walton County. The role involves practical nursing support and assistance to providers primarily in the laboratory, with potential to assist in other clinical areas as needed. The position serves as the key custodian for the medication room, laboratory, and medical records room and must adhere to information security policies. Patient‑Centered Interactions Respect patient and family values and expressed needs. Encourage patients to expand their role in decision‑making, health‑related behaviors, and self‑management. Communicate with patients in a culturally appropriate manner, in a language and at a level they understand. Obtain feedback from patients/family about their healthcare experience and use it for quality improvement. Care Coordination Link patients with community resources to facilitate referrals and respond to social service needs. Track and support patients when they obtain services outside the practice. Obtain tests and referral results and communicate with community organizations, health plans, facilities, and specialists. Communicate test results and care plans to patients/families. Laboratory Duties Collect laboratory specimens per provider’s orders for children and adults (blood, urine, sputum, stool, culture swabs). Label specimens at time of collection. Enter client data for lab order into HMS for processing and ensure services are captured on the superbill. Store specimens according to laboratory requirements prior to shipping. Ship laboratory specimens to outside labs per lab protocols. Use and maintain lab equipment including centrifuge, autoclave, glucose machine, hemoglobin machine, HgbA1C machine. Track labs for results return and notify provider of abnormal results. Follow up on lab specimen results that are not resulted promptly. Use personal protective equipment and aseptic technique for lab collection procedures. Perform daily laboratory QA/QI duties including controls and checking storage temperatures. Maintain QA/QI for autoclave. Maintain testing logs and manifests. Review and reconcile the E‑labs Error Report daily for all sites. Maintain the HMS E‑lab system including updating tests, codes, prices and collection/shipping requirements. Perform AAFP/PT at all sites and maintain documentation. Documentation Record objective and subjective data in electronic health record as required for each designated program. Record objective and subjective data before the end of the clinic visit. Perform chart review as directed for QA/QI. Document lab results in appropriate lab binders and in HMS. Maintain all required laboratory logs. Facility Maintenance Obtain supply inventory for lab and order and stock needed supplies. Clean lab draw room and direct patient care equipment after each visit and ensure lab draw room is client ready before each visit. Empty trash and dispose of supply boxes and containers. Secure full sharps containers, store full sharp containers in designated areas, and replace containers as needed in clinic areas. Clean spills immediately when observed or discovered. Immediately report non‑functioning or broken equipment to direct supervisor. Perform crash cart inventories for clinic and dental on a monthly basis. Direct Client Care Perform hearing screening. Perform visual acuity screening. Perform EKG and other in‑house diagnostics. Assist provider with bedside procedures. Administer oral, intramuscular, topical, subcutaneous, and inhalation medications and administer vaccines. Provide educational counseling and educational brochures to clients as indicated by health care needs. Triage and Work‑Up (infants, school‑aged children, adults) Obtain and document vital signs, height, weight, body mass index. Obtain chief complaint/history of present illness, medical history, allergy history, medication history and reconcile current medication list. Prepare client/exam room for provider visit. Report abnormal findings to provider. Leadership Role Train new employees/staff on lab processes and procedures. Serve as resource person for testing information for all staff. Other Responsibilities May perform other duties within the practical nursing scope of practice. Attend and participate in monthly general staff meetings and departmental meetings. Complete all job‑related assigned trainings. May participate on teams and/or committees with approval from supervisor. Complete Employee Activity Reports (EARS) and submit timesheets according to agency standards. Perform other related duties as assigned. Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Knowledge of nursing and public health principles, practices and techniques. Working knowledge of Florida Department of Health policies and procedures. Knowledge of specimen collection equipment and laboratory requirements for specific lab tests ordered. Working knowledge of Drug Assistance Program. Knowledge of human anatomy and physiology. Knowledge of community resources. Ability to administer medications and vaccines. Ability to provide preventative health care and treatment to clients. Ability to work with patients having a variety of physical and mental problems. Ability to plan, organize, prioritize, and coordinate work assignments efficiently. Ability to communicate effectively and appropriately with clients and staff members. Ability to remain flexible and adaptable in the work environment to meet clinic needs. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others. Ability to accommodate to changing directives and clinical situations. Ability to work independently or as a team member. Ability to teach health care relevant to the client’s health care needs and/or requests. Ability to use common computer programs such as Outlook, Word, Excel, PAP Tracker, and HMS. Working knowledge of current ACIP immunization schedule, use of VIS statements, FL Shots system. Ability to use and maintain clinic equipment such as the centrifuge, autoclave, EKG machine, nebulizer, pulse oximeter, manual and digital scales, stadiometer, audiometer, vision screening machine, glucose machine, eye wash station, electronic blood pressure machine, manual blood pressure cuff, and hemoglobin machine. Qualifications Minimum: Licensed LPN, valid driver’s license, CPR certification, HIV 501 certification. Preferred: Previous Public Health Experience. Benefits Annual and sick leave.
