Supervising Inspector

Job Overview FDNY seeks two full‑time Administrative Inspectors (Electrical) reporting directly to the Deputy Director of the Fire Alarm Inspection Unit. These non‑managerial positions focus on supervising field inspectors and ensuring compliance with New York City fire and life safety codes. Responsibilities Direct a subdivision of field inspectors conducting life safety and emergency system inspections in public and private buildings and monitoring central stations to ensure conformance with codes, standards, plans, and specifications. Interpret New York City codes, rules, and regulations. Perform administrative duties, including evaluation of field reports, reconsiderations, technical inquiries, and meetings with design engineers and contractors. Monitor high‑level projects. Conduct presentations. Represent the department on citywide code committees. Perform related duties as needed. Minimum Qualifications Seven years of full‑time satisfactory experience as an electrician, designer, or inspector of electrical installations for light, heat, and/or power distribution, traffic signals, fire alarm detection or communication systems, with at least eighteen months in a managerial, administrative, or supervisory capacity; Five years of experience as described in item 1, with at least 18 months in a managerial, administrative, or supervisory capacity and one of the following: 60 credits toward a degree in electrical engineering or electrical engineering technology from an accredited college or university; or Two years of full‑time training in an acceptable electrical program in an accredited technical school. Completion of an apprentice program at least three years in length in the electrical trade or electrical inspection, and either: Four years of experience as described in item 1; or Two years of experience as described in item 1 plus either 60 credits or two years of education as described in item 2. A license as a professional engineer or registered architect issued pursuant to the New York State Education Law, with at least two years of experience as described in item 1, at least 18 months in a managerial, administrative, or supervisory capacity; Education and/or experience equivalent to items 1, 2, or 3. All candidates must have at least two years of experience as described in item 1, with at least 18 months in a managerial, administrative, or supervisory capacity. Preferred Skills Excellent knowledge of life safety systems, including the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), Rules of the City of New York (RCNY), and Administrative Code; Prior supervisory experience; Excellent verbal and written communication skills. 55a Program This position is open to qualified persons with a disability who are eligible for the 55‑a Program.
