Clinical Assistant Urgent Care

The Clinical Assistant 2 in an urgent care setting provides comprehensive support to patients ranging from infants to the elderly in a rural ambulatory care clinic. This role is vital for maintaining efficient clinic operations and patient flow by performing complex clinical tasks, administrative duties, and ensuring accurate patient data management. The Clinical Assistant works closely with healthcare providers to facilitate patient care, perform point of care testing, assist with minor procedures, and manage clinic supplies and equipment. Responsibilities:

• Prepare for patient visits by reviewing charts and necessary forms.
• Obtain and record age-appropriate vital signs and medical history updates.
• Collect and document patient information accurately in medical records.
• Recognize and act on signs or symptoms requiring prompt intervention.
• Transport patients within the facility as needed.
• Assist with procedures, treatments, and minor office surgeries.
• Perform specimen collection and Point of Care Testing (POCT) following protocols.
• Apply heat/cold packs, abdominal binders, anti-embolism stockings, and oxygen as ordered.
• Assist patients with ambulation or transfer and perform minor treatments such as dressing changes, nebulizer treatments, ear lavage, cast removal, and DM foot screenings.
• Provide basic patient education and discharge instructions as directed.
• Sanitize exam rooms and maintain a safe, clean environment.
• Manage inventory, reorder, and stock medical and lab supplies.
• Dispose of waste according to infection control standards.
• Conduct QA checks on equipment and maintain logs.
• Utilize computer-based health information and electronic health record systems correctly.
• Answer inquiries, handle phone calls, and assist patients and staff courteously.
• Provide cross-coverage support to peers and other clinics as needed.
• Attend and participate in staff meetings and comply with departmental policies.

• High school diploma or GED.
• Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
• Completion of Certified Clinical Medical Assistant program or equivalent experience (one year as Clinical Assistant 1, CNA, EMT, or Community Health Aide level 1).
• Clinical competency certification within 3 months of hire and every 3 years thereafter.
• Knowledge of clinic procedures, medical terminology, and age-appropriate patient care.
• Proficiency in communication, customer service, and computer applications for medical databases and electronic health records.
• Ability to recognize and respond appropriately in emergency situations.
• Skill in operating medical equipment such as blood pressure cuffs, pulse oximeters, and EKG machines.

• Experience in urgent care or ambulatory clinic settings.
• Additional certifications related to clinical assistance or healthcare support.
• Familiarity with multiple EMR systems and training abilities.
• Strong organizational and multitasking skills.

• Must demonstrate ability to manage patient care duties while maintaining clinic flow efficiently.
• Work includes handling patients of all ages, including children, elderly, and impaired individuals requiring observation or assistance.
• Compliance with infection control standards and safety protocols is mandatory.
• Participation in ongoing training and competency assessments is required.
• May be required to provide cross-coverage and assist multiple clinics or peers as needed.

• Work schedule and shifts are determined by departmental guidelines to ensure clinic coverage and patient access to care.
• Participation in at least 50% of staff meetings annually is expected.
• Shift types may include day shifts typical for ambulatory care clinics; specific shift details are managed by the department.
