About the Role
The Company is in search of an Executive Director for Intellectual Property, with a strong focus on patent strategy and procurement. The successful candidate will be responsible for managing and further developing the global intellectual property portfolio, as well as enforcing it. This role is pivotal in providing counsel on IP matters that impact business and corporate strategy. The Executive Director will work closely with R&D, CMC, and other teams to identify and protect intellectual property, and will also be involved in IP-related transactions and due diligence. The ideal candidate should have a JD or MS in a biological field, be admitted to at least one US state bar, and be registered to practice before the USPTO. A minimum of 14 years of patent prosecution experience in the life sciences, particularly in biopharma, is required, with a preference for those with in-house experience in drug development and expertise in genetic medicines. Key responsibilities for the Executive Director include developing and refining IP strategy, managing the IP portfolio, directing outside counsel, and providing training on IP practices. The role also involves conducting IP analyses, managing disputes, and supporting business development activities. The candidate should have a strong background in supporting late-stage clinical and commercial biopharmaceutical products, and experience in strategic partnerships and commercial strategy. Excellent communication, negotiation, and presentation skills are essential, as is the ability to influence and partner across all levels of the company. The role demands a high level of integrity, judgment, and the ability to proactively recognize and communicate legal issues.
