Founded in 1881, SpelmanCollege is a private four-year liberal arts college located inAtlanta, GA. The oldest historically Black college for women in theUnited States, Spelman is a member of the Atlanta University CenterConsortium and Atlanta Regional Consortium for HigherEducation. Position Description The mission of the Spelman College Department of Psychology is toprepare students for the service and study of Psychology. We seekto empower women to lead and effect positive change in the world byinstructing our students in the ethical, systematic study ofbehavior and mental processes, and in the application of Psychologyto community and global issues, with the expectation ofintellectual engagement and academic excellence. The Department has16 full-time faculty members (11 tenure-track/tenured).Collectively, the Psychology Department faculty have expertise inapproximately nine Psychology subfields, ranging from ClinicalPsychology to Quantitative Psychology. The Department of Psychology at Spelman College is seekingto fill a position at the rank of Assistant Professor with an anticipated start date of August 2027 . Facultyshould be teacher-scholars who are dedicated to excellence inteaching, desire to pursue meaningful engagement in service toSpelman College, the profession, and the broader community, and anactive research program. All candidates are expected to have ademonstrated interest in a liberal arts education at a women’shistorically Black college, be able to contribute effectively toundergraduate teaching, advising, and mentoring, assist incurriculum development and assessment, provide service to thedepartment and College, as well as be active in scholarly,creative, and/or research productivity appropriate to a liberalarts environment. The successful candidate should have demonstratedscholarly productivity with the potential to secure externalfunding and to engage undergraduates in their scholarship,research, or creative pursuits. We are seeking someone with a Ph.D. in Social Psychology or closelyrelated fields. The ideal candidate will be expected to teachsocial psychology, race and gender psychology courses (e.g.,Psychology of the African American Experience, Psychology of Women,and/or Psychology of Racism), research-based courses (e.g.,Research Methods, Research Seminar, and Honors Thesis Seminar), andother courses in the candidate’s area of expertise. The specificarea of expertise within social psychology is open. We areparticularly interested in applicants whose research complementsthe Department’s strengths and curricular needs and integrates anintersectional lens in exploring culture, race and ethnicity,gender, intergroup relations, prejudice and discrimination, healthand well-being, social justice, and social change. The successful candidate must have a Ph.D. in hand or havefulfilled all requirements for the degree by the start of theappointment.
