Medical Assistant

To provide quality service to medical providers and patients in a customer service-oriented environment. The medical assistant is responsible for rooming patients after arrival for their scheduled appointments. Will assist the nursing staff and providers during examinations and assist with any notations in the charts. Will assist medical staff with other medical procedures when necessary and assist patients with medication issues. Clinical duties may include taking and recording vital signs and medical histories, preparing patients for examination, and administering medications as directed by provider.

Essential functions include obtaining vitals and rooms patients for providers, documenting chief complaint, HPI, medical, surgical and social histories, and current medications; assisting providers during exams and procedures as needed and performing tasks such as removing sutures and changing dressings on wounds; preparing and administering medications as directed by provider; explaining treatment procedures, medications, diets, and physicians' instructions to patients; authorizing drug refills and providing prescription information to pharmacies; performing general office duties such as answering telephones, prioritizing phone messages, pharmacy calls, and phone triage; scheduling patient procedures and educating on pre-procedure instructions and prep; tracking and obtaining all hospital procedure/pathology reports weekly for physician review; scanning and recording information such as op reports and test results in medical records; cleaning and stocking exam rooms, sterilizing instruments and disposing contaminated supplies; assisting with clean up in the team room at end of day; securing PHI, locking all necessary cabinets; checking refrigerator temperatures; counting narcotics/controlled substances; tracking quality indicators on all patients who have had a colonoscopy and follow ups for procedures by entering patient reminders; reviewing immunization history and inputting data into RX Preceptor and VSAS systems; coordinating with designated staff to order medical, lab, or office supplies and equipment; participating in clinic process improvement activities and team meetings to ensure efficient operations; assisting with covering other IM & GI Medical Assistants' absences as needed; reliable attendance and punctuality; performing other duties as assigned.

Position qualifications include certificates and licenses: Certified Medical Assistant or RMA (required); medical assistants who recently graduated from a medical assistant training program must obtain CMA/RMA within 60 days of employment. Education: high school graduate or general education degree (GED). Experience: one to two years medical office experience preferred; EHR experience preferred (we use eClinicalWorks); Microsoft Office experience a plus; bi-lingual candidates strongly considered.

Knowledge, skills, and abilities include knowledge of medical assisting principles, practices, and procedures (includes vitals, immunizations, medications, in-office lab testing and procedures, and sterilization methods); knowledge of federal, state and payer regulations and requirements related to medical assistants including patient safety, infection control (Universal Precautions), emergency operations, and patient confidentiality; knowledge of medical terminology and medical documentation principles; skill in time management and prioritizing work; skill in utilizing computerized systems to gather data, analyze results, and make recommendations; skill in customer service and professionalism; ability to conduct oneself professionally as an example for other employees; ability to problem solve and make decisions related to medical assisting duties; ability to communicate effectively with patients, coworkers, residents, physicians, and external partners; ability to collaborate with leadership to improve clinical care and operations; ability to work well as a team and independently; ability to wear personal protective equipment (PPE) (uniforms, sterile gloves, closed toe shoes); ability to be prompt and present during scheduled work hours.
