Agency Summary
The Unity Council is a non-profit Social Equity Development Corporation with an over 60-year history in the Fruitvale neighborhood of Oakland. Our mission is to promote social equity and improve quality of life by building vibrant communities where everyone can work, learn, and thrive.
Our programs aim to provide the community with the tools, knowledge, and resources to transform their lives and ultimately achieve their long-term educational, career, and financial goals. These holistic programs and services reach more than 10,000 individuals and families annually in five languages. Programs include early childhood education, youth mentorship and leadership development, employment services, career readiness training, housing and financial stability, senior citizen services, affordable housing and neighborhood development, and arts and cultural events. Our work expands beyond the Fruitvale district and now reaches across Oakland and into Contra Costa County. The Unity Council employs a diverse workforce of more than 300 people who reflect the linguistic, cultural, and ethnic identity of the communities we serve.
Department Summary
The Community Programs Department provides integrated educational, career, financial, and housing services that help Oakland residents overcome barriers and advance toward social equity.
Within the department, Youth Achievement Programs, including the Latinx Mentorship and Achievement (LMA) Program, support youth of color in reaching their educational and personal goals. LMA is a school-based, culturally rooted program serving Latine female and non-binary youth ages 14–19 in Oakland. The program focuses on high school transition and graduation, social-emotional well-being, positive relationships, leadership, identity development, and connecting youth and families to supportive services.
LMA offers culturally affirming programming through Chicanx/Latinx Studies, Rooted & Rising Leadership, Escalera College & Career Readiness, and a summer Youth Leadership initiative at Madison Park Academy and Arise High School. Its work is grounded in collective and transformative leadership, critical consciousness, holistic well-being, intersectionality, transformative agency, and cultural affirmation.
Position Summary
The Youth Advocate provides case management to LMA youth and facilitates workshops and classes on college/career readiness and culturally-rooted Chicanx/Latinx Studies curriculum. This position requires a compassionate, proactive individual skilled in facilitation, motivating youth, and fostering resilience, who can work effectively across school sites and program partners, and who reliably logs attendance, case notes, and student data after each session. The Youth Advocate supports these efforts through mentorship, case management, psycho-social assessment, and intervention strategies, and may extend support to select students inside and outside the LMA program based on need. A successful Youth Advocate uses strength-based, culturally-rooted, culturally-responsive, and youth-centered approaches to promote students' well-being.
