Location: Penn Presbyterian Medical Center- 51 N 39th Street
Hours: Fulltime, Day, Monday-Friday
Summary: Under the supervision of the Ophthalmology Imaging Leadership, the Ophthalmic Diagnostic Imaging Specialist III is responsible for performing and coordinating comprehensive patient testing services. The primary purpose of this position is to provide a variety of tests in order to aid physicians in the documentation, diagnosis, tracking, and treatment of eye conditions.
Responsibilities:
- Perform diagnostic imaging, including corneal topography, optical coherence tomography, color and monochromatic fundus photography, scanning laser ophthalmoscopy, fundus autofluorescence, retinal screening, fluorescein and/or indocyaninegreen angiography, slit lamp biomicrography, goniography, specular microscopy, external eye photography, ocular surface interferometry, intraocular lens calculations, a-scan biometry, diagnostic b-scan ultrasonography, ultrasound biomicroscopy, and additional tests such as visual field exams, electrophysiology, color vision and dark adaptation testing.
- Operate and maintain diagnostic equipment.
- Perform study imaging per protocol, which may require completion of additional research certifications and secure document transfer to reading centers.
- Prepare rooms, maintaining cleanliness of testing areas.
- Explain procedure details to patients, appropriately responding to questions and concerns.
- Assist patients through procedures, ensuring secure and proper positioning for testing.
- Confirm testing result availability through picture archiving and communication system, documenting procedure details within electronic medical record.
- Identify equipment malfunction and quality issues, communicating problems to manager and technical support personnel.
- Attend educational conferences and meetings to upkeep clinical certification(s), and to continually remain updated on current information in the field of ophthalmic diagnostic imaging.
- Train and review competency of coworkers, including ophthalmic technicians and ophthalmic diagnostic imaging specialists.
- Lecture and/or teach workshops at educational programs.
- Create images or video for publication or educational purposes.
- Interpret diagnostic images and reports for quality and clinical accuracy.
- May additionally perform orbital ultrasound, quantify intraocular tumors, and train others to prepare ultrasound reports on patients with eye conditions.
- May provide imaging support for physicians and patients during evaluations under anesthesia and/or within operating room.
- May submit images for Scientific Exhibition.
- May order and replenish supplies and medications in diagnostic testing areas as needed.
- Performs duties in accordance with Penn Medicine and entity values, policies, and procedures.
- Other duties as assigned to support the unit, department, entity, and health system organization.
Education and Experience:
- H.S. Diploma/GED AND 3 years or more of work experience in ophthalmic imaging (Required)
- Bachelor's degree in Photographic Sciences, Imaging, Life Sciences and 22 years or more of work experience in ophthalmic imaging (Preferred)
Licenses:
- At least three of the ophthalmic imaging certifications: OCT-C or ROUB or CRA ort CDOS (Required)
- COA, COT, COMT (Preferred)

- Able to maintain confidentiality and follow all guidelines for documentation
- Ability to organize, prioritize, and coordinate various activities including patient testing according to schedule
- Ability to work with compassion with visually impaired, deaf-blind and multi-disabled patients is essential
- Strong ability to work independently, and as part of a team
- Experience working in ophthalmology with ophthalmic imaging equipment, EMR, and PACS
- Working knowledge of the eye anatomy and physiology
- Prior experience working in clinical trials or research setting
- Prior experience training others
- Perform corneal topography
- Perform OCT (optical coherence tomography), including retinal, anterior segment, and OCT-Angiography
- Perform fundus photography, including color and monochromatic imaging, scanning laser ophthalmoscopy, autofluorescence, and retinal screening
- Perform angiography, including both fluorescein and indocyanine-green
- Perform external eye photography, including slit lamp, gonio, specular microscopy, and ocular surfaceinterferometry
- Perform IOL (intraocular lens) master calculations, including A-scan biometry
- Perform ultrasounds, including standardized and/or diagnostic A-scan, B-scan, and UBM (ultrasound biomicroscopy)
- Perform visual field exams and/or electrophysiology, color vision testing and dark adaptation testing as needed
- Perform phlebotomy and IV insertion as directed by the provider. Intermittent catheters may only be connected to a closed end (cap) Standard (Preferred)
