POLICE OFFICER

Description Of Major Job Duties Hiring Incentive: $2,500 paid after 1 year of service. An additional $2,500 to be paid after 2 years of service. Under the direct supervision of a Command Officer, Police Officers perform professional police work for the Wayne County Sheriff's Office. All new hires will be assigned to the newly constructed Adult Detention Facility at the Wayne County Criminal Justice Center on any available shift. In general, Police Officers in the Sheriff's Office are assigned to the Adult Detention Facility, Field Services or Court Services Divisions. Functions include booking, searching and guarding prisoners; maintaining order and guarding judges and juries; providing building security at County facilities; serving civil process; tracing persons; making arrests and performing numerous and diverse law enforcement duties as requested. Police specialized positions receive additional training and compensation. Employees in this class are required to work mandatory overtime for roll call. Responsibilities Maintain and ensure the security of the Wayne County Adult Detention Facility and its prisoners. Conform to rules, regulations and procedures of the Wayne County Sheriff's Adult Detention Facility. Provide for and ensure the humane treatment of prisoners. Testify at legal or legislative proceedings. Monitor, supervise and control inmate prisoners. Ensure inmate adherence to laws, rules and regulations. Prepare reports, conduct inmate investigations, transport inmate prisoners, and provide emergency assistance as necessary. Investigate accidents to determine cause. Investigate illegal or suspicious activities. Respond to emergency alarms and situations. Conduct daily headcounts to ensure that all inmates are present and accounted for. Maintain operational records. Prepare investigation or incident reports. Record crime or accident scene evidence with video or still cameras. Drive and control a police vehicle safely. Takes appropriate police action in response to emergencies or other situations requiring a police response. Monitor courtroom participants and public observers for proper demeanor and conduct. Monitor and maintain the safety of in‑custody defendants and juveniles. Assist with building emergency procedures. Provide proper transportation of prisoners from lockups to courtrooms and Adult Detention facilities. Assist with building security, perimeter security, public security, public screening, and other duties as assigned by command officers. Provide courtroom security for judges, litigants, and visitors to ensure orderly and efficient court proceedings. Work co‑operatively with other police agencies. Ensure physical and computer accountability of all inmates and accuracy of information. Perform other duties as assigned. Qualifications Be a citizen of the United States. Be 18 years of age or older and have a high school diploma or G.E.D. Have a valid Michigan Driver's License and a good driving record. Prior to hire, have passed the MSCTC Local Corrections Officer Physical Ability Test. Prior to hire, have passed the EMPCO written exam. Tests and Evaluation Background Investigation (Pass/Fail) Personal Qualifications Interview, rated at 60% Experience, 25% Higher Education, 15% Applicants must pass all tests to be placed on the eligibility list. The eligibility list will remain in effect for six months but may be extended. This is a continuous examination and ranking on the eligible list will be subject to change as names are added and removed from the list. General Information Pay Rate and Fringe Benefits: Full‑time positions will be paid at the minimum pay rate with annual increases where applicable. Payment is bi‑weekly. Full‑time, permanent employees receive fringe benefits, which include vacation pay, sick leave pay, health care insurance, optical, dental, long‑term disability, life insurance, and a retirement plan. Full‑time positions are subject to mandatory and voluntary overtime assignments. Medical Examination: A pre‑employment medical examination, including a drug screen, is required. Candidates who do not pass will be disqualified. Applicants must meet MSCTC standards. Probationary Period: Appointees must successfully complete jailer’s training and a probationary period as provided in the collective bargaining agreement before achieving regular status. Veteran's Preference: Honorably discharged war veterans who receive passing grades on examinations will have ten (10) points added to their final earned examination scores, and those who have a service‑connected disability will have five (5) points added to their score, for a possible total of fifteen (15) additional points. Requests and proof must be submitted at examination time. Ineligible Please note: Applicants that are disqualified for any reason may not re‑apply for a police officer examination for six (6) months from the date of disqualification. Civil Service Appeal Rights: Under the Rules of the Department of Personnel/Human Resources, requests to review the personal qualifications interviews must be made in writing within twenty (20) days after the mailing of the notice of results and any appeal concerning the ratings received must be made in writing within twenty (20) days after the review.
