Job Summary Provides daily husbandry care and maintenance required for the health and cleanliness of research animals and their housing facilities in accordance with established procedures and schedules. This adheres to state and federal regulations and accrediting agencies guidelines (AAALAC). Provides technical assistance with procedures including bloodletting, parasite screens, and routine treatments under the direction of the Supervisor. Assists research staff as needed. Essential Responsibilities Provides daily husbandry care to research animals according to department standard operating procedures, state and federal regulations, and accrediting agency guidelines. Duties include providing clean, sanitized caging material, fresh food and water, and environmental enrichment on a scheduled and as‑needed basis. Monitors animal health and well‑being in assigned areas. Reports signs of illness to the Supervisor immediately and completes all required reporting documents and cage notification cards. Assists with the sentinel surveillance program. Performs bloodletting, fur plucks, and fecal testing on sentinel animals according to the department's standard operating procedure, and prepares samples for transport to off‑site diagnostic laboratories. Houses newly arriving animal colonies according to department standard operating procedures, ensuring that orders match the posted incoming animal log and assigned cage cards. Reports errors immediately to the Supervisor. Provides technical assistance with animal treatments and health monitoring of colony animals. May assist research staff with training in techniques such as restraint, bloodletting, and injections. Required Qualifications High School diploma or GED required. Certificate 1 preferred: Laboratory Animal Technician; Certificate 2 preferred: Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician. 1–3 years related work experience required. Two years experience working with laboratory animals, including specialized husbandry techniques. Knowledge of basic animal technical procedures such as restraint, bloodletting, sample collection, and routine treatments for laboratory animals. Must be able to work well as part of a team and follow detailed instructions with minimal supervision. Must not be overly allergic to animals in a way that affects ability to work with them. Basic familiarity with computers and ability to navigate web‑based applications. Preferred Qualifications Certification at the AALAS Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician or Laboratory Animal Technician levels. Oral Communications – Ability to comprehend and converse in English to communicate effectively with staff and others. Knowledge – Ability to demonstrate basic knowledge of fundamental concepts and apply them in routine situations. Teamwork – Ability to interact respectfully with employees, professional staff, and external contacts. Customer Service – Ability to demonstrate a positive attitude and respond to requests in a timely and respectful manner. Physical Nature of the Job Medium work: Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally and up to 20 pounds of force frequently. Job is physical in nature and requires standing and/or moving around during the majority of the shift. Pay Range $21.15 - $28.47 The pay range listed for this position is the base hourly wage range the organization reasonably and in good faith expects to pay for this position at this time. Actual compensation is determined based on several factors that may include seniority, education, training, relevant experience, certifications, geography of work location, duties, or other applicable factors permissible by law. Compensation may exceed the base hourly rate depending on shift differentials, call pay, premium pay, overtime pay, and other additional pay practices, as applicable to the position and in accordance with the law.
